‘Loki’ on Disney+ Is Going to Bring a New Genre to the MCU
With The Falcon and the Winter Soldier coming to an end, the next Marvel series on the roster is Loki. Loki’s always been a trickster with a lot of surprises up his sleeve, but his show definitely looks like a departure from what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done and for the character as well. Even after the unique elements of WandaVision just passed. And Kevin Feige just revealed that further by sharing what genre Loki is going to resemble most.
‘WandaVision’ started this new wave of Marvel shows
WandaVision was a big homage to classic American sitcoms. In doing that, it was unlike anything the MCU had ever done. After episode 3, the show finally got into the “real world” and showed more of S.W.O.R.D., post-Blip life, and felt more like Marvel projects in the past. Even though it wasn’t meant to be the first MCU Disney+ series, it ended up that way and sort of became a “template” for Marvel’s new wave of series according to Feige.
“This is probably the most overt level, black and white, old fashioned aspect ratio, but every show that we’re working on I think is about creative swings for both marvel studios, the MCU and television,” he told IMDb. “So I’m very excited about what we’ve already shown on Falcon and The Winter Soldier – that is a very big scale epic action buddy series that we’re excited about.”

So, what makes Loki different from others? The trailer does a good job of reminding audiences that the Loki that the show will focus on will be the one they saw leave the scene in Avengers: Endgame when they went back in time to the first Avengers film. So he’s off running amok somewhere, but the Loki that went through development after that movie, and specifically Thor: Ragnarok, is still dead.
In the Loki series, that 2012 Loki gets caught for dimension-hopping or time-hopping and is recruited to help fix his mess (and maybe some others’).
With that, what can fans expect from the series? How will it follow in WandaVision’s footsteps in a new MCU direction? Feige touched on that as well, of course.
“Loki, we’ve not said much about, but is intriguingly different and I think we’ve called it a crime thriller,” he said. “Which is not something you would necessarily think of when it came to Loki.”
So while WandaVision brought two Avengers into sitcom territory, Loki will get into a crime show stopper. With a bit of humor from the looks of it too.
Loki’s shapeshifting will come back into play, but maybe not so literal
In a new interview with Empire on April 12, Tom Hiddleston shared that the show’s logo, with the different fonts for each letter of Loki, hints at the god’s shapeshifting abilities.
“Loki is the quintessential shapeshifter,” Hiddleston told the magazine. “His mercurial nature is that you don’t know whether, across the MCU, he’s a hero or a villain or an anti-hero. You don’t know whether you can trust him. He literally and physically changes shape into an Asgardian guard, or into Captain America repeatedly. Thor talks about how he could change into a snake.”
But without giving too much away, Hiddleston also pointed out this has to do more so with what the show’s going to tackle and less about Loki using that power all the time.
“I think that shapeshifting logo might give you an idea that Loki, the show, is about identity, and about integrating the disparate fragments of the many selves that he can be, and perhaps the many selves that we are,” he said. “I thought it was very exciting because I’ve always found Loki a very complex construct. Who is this character who can wear so many masks, and changes shape, and seems to change his external feeling on a sixpence?”
Loki premieres on Disney+ on June 11.
