Ryan Reynolds Used This Acting Technique to End Past Relationships
Ryan Reynolds dated his fair share of women before settling down with current wife Blake Lively. Back in his younger years, he turned to one tried and true acting method to let his past girlfriends down easy.
How Ryan Reynolds got out of his past relationships
Reynolds’ ability as an actor paid off both in his professional and dating lives. Most of the time, breaking up with a significant other can be a difficult thing to do. And although there’s no easy way to turn down a partner, The Proposal star found that crying was a nice exit strategy. In an old interview on Conan (via Contact Music), Reynolds revealed that he could cry on cue.
“I can fake cry, which is actually a very evil thing to be able to do. I can make the tears come out… When I was a younger guy with less scruples, I may have broken up with a couple of girls using that little one,” Reynolds said. “You get some tears in your eyes and you’re a sympathetic character.”
Ryan Reynolds went through a few break-ups before marrying Blake Lively
Reynolds was involved in many high-profile relationships before finding his perfect partner in Blake Lively. Some of his more famous flings included Sabrina the Teenage Witch star Melissa Joan Hart and singer Alanis Morissette. He had a few smaller flings with actors Kristen Johnson and Traylor Howard in the 90s. Before Lively, perhaps his most well-known relationship was with Scarlett Johansson.
It’s unclear how Reynolds and Johansson officially linked up with each other. But they started dating in 2007. They engaged and married just a year later in 2008 before divorcing in 2011. Although both have been very private about the source of their divorce, Reynolds once vowed never to get married again after the experience.
“I don’t think I want to get married again,” Reynolds once said according to Daily Mail. “But you always re-evaluate these things. Any kind of crisis can be good. It wakes you up. I gotta say, I’m a different person than I was six months ago.”
The final celebrity Reynolds was linked to before Lively was Charlize Theron.
How Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s relationship works
It appears Reynolds hasn’t needed to cry on cue for Lively. The two met on the set of Green Lantern, but didn’t date each other until some time later. Until then, they were mostly friends. They even went on a double date together while they were seeing other people. Reynolds believed their natural chemistry as friends was the reason why they clicked so well when they became an item.
“That was the most awkward date because we were just like fireworks coming across,” Reynolds once said according to Elite Daily. “It was weird at first but we were buddies for a long time. I think it’s the best way to have a relationship is to start as friends.”
The pair eventually got married in 2012, and have been together ever since. They currently have four kids together.
In a recent interview with People, Reynolds explained why he felt his marriage to Lively worked so well. He compared it a little bit to his long friendship with Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman.
“I think the secret sauce to a long-lasting Hollywood friendship is not too dissimilar to having a partner or a marriage,” he explained. “I am genuinely rooting for you, all the time. I want you to win. It’s the same way I feel about Blake. As I’m rooting for her, I know she’s rooting for me, and it’s why we’re so connected.”
