Joanna Gaines can’t stay away from a new design project for long. The former Fixer Upper star left HGTV back in 2018 alongside her husband, Chip Gaines, so the two could focus on their family and pursue new projects. Since then, they have launched Magnolia Network, Joanna has started her own cooking show, and the couple even remodeled a century-old castle.

Now, Joanna is giving fans a sneak peek at her newest design project, though she is keeping most of the details quiet.

Joanna Gaines is working on a new project

Those who regularly watch Joanna’s Instagram stories might have seen her hint at a new project on May 11. Joanna posted two Instagram stories back-to-back in the afternoon (they remain live until the afternoon on Friday, May 12), which featured the song “Pretty Girls Walk” by Vette while showing off a video of tiles. “Finalizing tile selections for a new project we can’t wait to share with you!” Joanna’s caption read.

The video featured various tiles of different shapes, colors, and sizes all laid out on a white marble countertop. Another video showed three women appearing to analyze the tile, with one person on a computer looking to be putting together some sort of design. Joanna gave minimal details about the new project, so it’s unclear if the tiles will be using as flooring, on the walls, in a kitchen, etc. It remains to be seen if the project is even a new remodel, but Joanna’s caption suggested that new details will be shared soon.

Chip and Joanna Gaines have taken on a number of projects since leaving HGTV

After stepping down from HGTV in 2018, Chip and Joanna welcomed their fifth child, Crew, and have since been hard at work in other areas of their Magnolia brand. Joanna continues to produce her magazine, Magnolia Journal, and the two launched a restaurant and bakery at Waco’s Magnolia at the Silos.

Perhaps the biggest project the couple worked on was the launch of their own television network, Magnolia Network. The channel features design shows from many different talents, as well as Joanna’s cooking show, Magnolia Table (named after her cookbooks — the third of which was released in May 2023).

Chip and Joanna have continued their remodeling with a new variation of Fixer Upper on Magnolia Network; the couple also recently rehabbed a 100-year-old castle in Waco, which was a project Joanna had said they’d always wanted to take on. By the looks of it, Joanna is hard at work on her next project, though its purpose remains a surprise.

On April 26, the Gaines stepped out in Washington for a dinner hosted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. Joanna donned an elegant, off-the-shoulder black dress, while Chip cleaned up in a stylish suit and tie for the event, which honored South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee.

“What an honor it was to be a part of tonight’s State Dinner to celebrate the 70-year alliance between the United States of America and my mother’s home country of South Korea,” Joanna shared on Instagram. “Coming off the heels of our incredible trip to Seoul, this evening was another reminder of just how proud I am to be a Korean American.”

Other guests at the dinner included Angelina Jolie and her 21-year-old son Maddox Jolie-Pitt as well as Tony-winning singer and actor Lea Salonga.

The ‘Fixer Upper’ star celebrates her Korean heritage

Chip and Joanna’s White House visit comes on the heels of their visit to South Korea earlier in April. It was a journey to her mother’s homeland the family had long dreamed of taking.

“For years, my mother has talked about taking her three daughters to Seoul, Korea, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom,” the Magnolia Network personality shared on Instagram. However, Joanna said the dream always felt “just a little out of reach” – until this year.

“[W]e decided to finally book it, and we convinced 24 members of our family to come with us to visit the place where my mom grew up,” she explained.

During their trip, Chip, Jo, and their kids met family members for the first time, saw the cherry blossoms in bloom, and visited places where Jo’s mother had spent time when she was young.

“In a lot of ways, this trip felt like coming home,” Joanna wrote. “Somehow, connecting with my mom’s past made my own story feel more complete.”

Joanna’s parents met when her father, Jerry, was stationed at a U.S. military base in South Korea in the 1970s. A few months after Jerry returned to the United States, her mom, Nan, followed. They married and eventually settled in Waco, Texas.

Growing up, Joanna did not always embrace her Korean heritage, which she now regrets.

“I don’t know that I ever told you this,” Joanna told her mother in a November 2022 episode of her podcast, The Stories We Tell With Joanna Gaines, “But I always wanted to say I was sorry for living in halfness. And not fully embracing the most beautiful thing about myself, which was you.”

The beloved Fixer Upper star earned her bachelor’s degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, back in 2001. While one might assume that her degree was in design, Joanna actually obtained a degree in communications.

Her lack of formal design education did not stop her from becoming a renowned design expert. To this day, Joanna is still impressing fans with her talent and creativity in the world of home design.

The ‘Fixer Upper’ star is not a Texas native

“In the first months of our marriage, we were always flipping a house,” Chip told People, according to OK! Magazine. “We were working on this little shop, we had babies early in the process.” He then noted he and Joanna discovered that they “quickly” had to reevaluate their partnership and fully work together to accomplish their goals. “We pretty quickly had to say, ‘We’re either going to go at each other and blow this thing up, you and I trying to fight each other about every nook and cranny, or we can figure out how to come together as a team,'” he added.

Chip then noted that the “adversity” he and Joanna faced caused their “natural tendency” to result in acting “ugly” toward each other during difficult times. “We’ve had our challenges,” he noted. “I don’t want to belittle that piece of the equation.”

While Chip and Joanna Gaines found great success through Fixer Upper and their Magnolia businesses, they’ve also faced hardship.

Insider reports one of the first controversies the couple dealt with was regarding past Fixer Upper homes. Homeowners on the show started renting their properties for Airbnb and VRBO. And reports suggested the homeowners chose this route as a result of the unwanted attention Fixer Upper brought them. A representative for Magnolia noted they planned on changing the contracts to discourage homeowners from doing this.

Chip and Joanna were also sued for $1 million by their neighbor. The couple hoped to buy the neighbor’s alleyway for parking purposes, but Chip made a gate to use for the alleyway when negotiations stalled. This deeply upset the neighbor.

Just a year later in 2017, two of Chip’s business partners sued him for $1 million. The partners accused Chip of defrauding them.

Then, in 2018, the Fixer Upper couple was fined $40,000 for using paint that violated the lead-paint rules.

Chip and Joana rose to fame after starring in HGTV’s popular series Fixer Upper. They went on to establish a successful brand outside of the show and became partially responsible for revitalizing their hometown of Waco, Texas.

But along with their interior design skills and real estate expertise, the couple are dedicated Christians. Joanna, for instance, has been very open about her discussions with God and has even written about her religious experiences.

The couple calls Antioch Community Church, located in Waco, their home church. The institution is nondenominational with an emphasis on evangelical missions. And the pastor of the church, Jimmy Seibert, refers to Chip and Joanna as his “dear friends.”

This closeness wouldn’t be out of the ordinary, but Seibert’s controversial views on same-sex marriage has left Fixer Upper fans questioning Chip and Joanna’s beliefs.

‘Fixer Upper’ stars get labeled as ‘hateful’ due to their relationship with a Waco local

Considering their ties to the Antioch Community Church, fans have started to label Chip and Joanna as ‘hateful.’ Unfortunately, the home renovation stars have not addressed the controversy surrounding their pastor. But it is pretty clear where he stands on the issue.

Back in 2016, Buzzfeed launched an investigation into the Antioch Community Church and pastor Siebert. The investigation uncovered a video in which Siebert spoke out against same-sex marriage in a radical way.

“This is a clear biblical admonition. So if someone were to say, ‘Marriage is defined in a different way,’ let me just say: They are wrong. God defined marriage, not you and I,” Siebert stated. “God defined masculine and feminine, male and female, not you and I.”

In that same video, Siebert told his congregation that “homosexuality is a sin,” leaving little doubt about where he stands on the issue.

Siebert was later asked if Chip and Joanna share his views. A spokesperson for the church refused to comment on the question, but they made it clear that Siebert is not willing to change his mind.

HGTV releases a statement about Chip and Joanna Gaines’ controversial pastor

From Christians to feminists and LGBTQ viewers, the hit TV show Fixer Upper has amassed a diverse fan base. The show’s widespread appeal is a testament to Chip and Joanna’s ability to create a welcoming environment for all viewers.

This is why their close connection to Siebert is so disturbing, and some viewers calling the couple ’hateful.’ While Chip and Joanna have yet to speak out against Siebert, HGTV did release a statement on the matter in 2016.

The network assured fans that they are committed to showcasing diversity and inclusivity in all of its shows. HGTV also stated that discrimination against members of the LGBTQ community has no place on any of their shows, including Fixer Upper.

The only problem with their grand design is that the home did not have an actual fireplace. To make up for it, the couple hung baskets in their place, which appeared to contain a few bird nests.

Excessive reclaimed wood failed to impress on the ‘Fixer Upper’ Season 2 premiere

On April 12, Chip and Joanna Gaines’ brand Magnolia shared an Instagram post with some exciting news. A new season of Fixer Upper is coming, and the home renovation and design duo will restore a boutique hotel in their hometown of Waco, Texas.

“Psst…big news! A new season of Fixer Upper is coming this fall and it’s one of @joannagaines and @chipgaines’ most exciting projects yet: a boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Waco, TX,” the post reads. “The best part? It’s just a few blocks from the Silos, so you’ll be able to stay there when you come visit. We can’t wait! #FixerUpperTheHotel.”

The ‘Fixer Upper’ Hotel 1928 spinoff will premiere in November

According to Deadline, Hotel 1928 is scheduled to open in October, and the Fixer Upper spinoff about renovating the Waco, Texas property will premiere in November. Chip and Joanna Gaines fans will be able to watch the couple restore their biggest project yet, the 50,000-square-foot, century-old boutique hotel.

“For us, this project represents everything we are most passionate about – hospitality, restoration and home,” said the Gaineses. “We’ve always been firm believers in the value of home, as a place but also as a feeling. Our dream for this hotel is that it would serve as an extension of home to every guest who comes to stay.”

The couple will convert the former Grand Karem Shrine building into the premier hotel destination in Waco, including “four floors of 33 bespoke guest rooms, a restaurant, ballroom event space and a rooftop terrace.” The Fixer Upper spinoff series will have six half-hour episodes culminating in the hotel’s grand opening.

Chip and Joanna Gaines previously restored a 100-year-old castle

Although Hotel 1928 will be their biggest project, Chip and Joanna Gaines have tackled huge buildings before: the Fixer Upper stars restored a castle last year.

In the Spring 2023 spring issue of The Magnolia Journal, Joanna described how she and Chip were always inspired by the property. “Every time we drove past the castle, his eyes grew wider, his imagination wilder – it was more than 6,000 square feet of potential, waiting to be unearthed and restored to its former glory,” she wrote. “During the 20 years that the castle went on and off the market, Chip consistently put in offers for a shot at bringing it back to life.”

Joanna admitted that the massive project was a bit intimidating. “But tackling a project like this – one at that scale with 130 years worth of history – felt daunting,” she wrote. “Until one day in 2019 when Chip surprised me with a call – his offer had been accepted, and the castle was ours.”

The couple learned an important lesson while restoring the property. “The castle taught us that sometimes the forgotten things in life don’t need a reinvention but just a little dusting off,” Joanna wrote. “And the deep-seated dreams within you and me are worth holding on to. Yes, even the ones 20 years in the making.”

Chip and Joanna Gaines’ neighbor at Magnolia Market sued the ‘Fixer Upper’ stars

In 2016, Chip and Joanna Gaines’ neighbor at the Magnolia Market sued the Fixer Upper stars for $1 million over the property surrounding the market in Waco, Texas (per Country Living).

The HGTV stars did not own the alley next to Magnolia Market, but the Gainses had a lease agreement with the previous owner allowing customers to park there for free.

When Daron Farmer purchased the land including the alley, the new owner wanted to charge market visitors $10 for parking. Chip installed a metal gate after Farmer and the Gainses failed to reach a compromise over the alley. Farmer claimed the gate partially restricted access to his land and illegally obstructed his private property.

Chip and Joanna’s lawyer said the Fixer Upper stars erected the gate to protect their business. The couple didn’t want Magnolia Market customers to be charged a parking fee. Farmer sued for between $200,000 and $1 million in damages and demanded the gate’s removal.

In 2017, the lawsuit was dismissed after Chip and Joanna bought the property next to Magnolia Market from Farmer.

“I’m glad that Chip and I were able to resolve the case peacefully and remove it from the court system,” said Farmer (per KBTX). “Chip and I today are in good standing.”

2 of Chip Gaines’ former business partners sued him

In 2017, two of Chip Gaines’ former business partners, Richard L. Clark and John L. Lewis, filed a lawsuit against the Fixer Upper star.

Lewis and Clark said Chip persuaded them to sell their one-third ownership stakes in Magnolia Realty for $2,500 apiece in May 2013. They said Chip withheld the information that those stakes’ value was about to increase dramatically, thanks to the HGTV show. Clark and Lewis sued for over $1 million and their ownership stakes back, or compensation for what their Magnolia Realty stakes would be worth had they known about Fixer Upper’s success.

The lawsuit carried on for nearly three years. A judge dismissed the lawsuit in February 2020 and sealed the case records, including Chip’s deposition, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald.

Gaines then countersued Clarke and Lewis, claiming they defamed him. Gaines reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement in July 2023.

The ‘Fixer Upper’ stars’ literary agent filed a lawsuit over a book deal

Chip and Joanna Gaines are currently facing another lawsuit over a book deal. In December 2022, the Fixer Upper stars’ literary agent sued them for breach of contract.

Agent David Vigliano claimed the couple changed the terms of a five-book publishing deal with a $12.5 million advance without his consent (per The Wall Street Journal). The contract alterations reduced the total number of books from five to four and took away the option of a sixth book.

The changes allegedly deprived Vigliano Associates of other earnings and fees from the original deal. The court documents also claim that Joanna made a deal with another literary agent, and the money from her book The Stories We Tell should have gone to Vigliano Associates. Vigliano demanded $1 million in damages.

Joanna Gaines is a woman of many talents, and the Fixer Upper star revealed a secret skill during the season 2 premiere of Magnolia Table.

“Did you know that I play the drums?” Joanna said while hammering the crunchy coating for her French toast. “When I was newly married, I told Chip my dream is to be a drummer in a band. And the next day, I come home and there’s a full set of drums. So, I took lessons for a year and I was a drummer.”

Chip Gaines’ drumset meant more to Joanna Gaines than a thoughtful gift. To her, it exemplified how her husband always inspired her to go after whatever she wanted.

The Fixer Upper star repeated the drums story during an interview with PopSugar. Joanna explained she had casually mentioned to Chip that she wanted to learn how to play the instrument. “The next day there was a brand new set of drums in the living room,” she said.

“This theme of pushing me to follow my dreams has continued in our 12 years of marriage. Whether it is drum lessons or starting a business, he has always been the wind at my back that encourages me to go for it.”

The ‘Fixer Upper’ star said her husband always encouraged her to follow her dreams

Joanna Gaines has said she almost didn’t go on a second date with Chip because he was so chatty and loved to take risks. But she learned to love those qualities and found they brought out the best in her.

“All the ideas and dreams he held for himself were anything but ordinary, and he talked about the world around him through the lens of untapped potential,” she wrote in an essay for Magnolia Journal titled “Slow Yes” (per People). “When Chip did eventually stop talking, if only to take a breath, I found myself wanting to fill the silence with plans and dreams of my own.”

She saw that Chip’s impetuous nature balanced out her caution and reservedness. Joanna always had big dreams, but Chip inspired her to turn them into reality.

“This near-stranger had drawn out a side of me that I didn’t yet know existed,” she wrote. “My gut told me there was something there worth waiting for. Our lives have beat to this same rhythm ever since.”

Joanna Gaines regularly shares life moments with fans and followers

The Fixer Upper star has always been very open about the life-changing experiences she has overcome during her 44 years around the sun. She has discussed these events in books, on camera, and via her social media posts.

In her newest book, The Stories We Tell, Gaines spoke of the first time her oldest son Drake drove away from home alone. She admitted, “There were a lot of tears. It hurts to see my son leave in such an obvious display of what it looks like to grow out of us.”

After her son left, Joanna returned inside to find her youngest child, Crew, playing in their family home. He wanted her to join him.

“The light softened, my heart swelled, and at that moment, I knew how essential that rhythm is, to lose and then gain, to have and to hold, only to let go,” she wrote.

Gaines concluded, “It was a gift of perspective. This is a beautiful and gracious reminder of the bigger picture. Showing me that highs follow lows and that sorrow and joy can go hand in hand. And letting go reveals what else our arms are made to carry.”

On Apr. 4, 2023, Joanna Gaines posted an Instagram video capturing a real-life, relatable moment. On a visit to South Korea, the designer and cooking show host seemed tired after a long flight from her Texas home.

Gaines started the ball rolling by captioning the video, “When the jet lag sets in.” In addition, her followers flooded the clip’s comments section with remarks about understanding her exhaustion.

Fans shared many observations regarding the video. Some were funny, others touching. All genuinely understood the moment.

“That’s just mom life on the daily over here,” wrote one follower. A second claimed, “This is me every 5 seconds trying to remember what I was doing.”

A third Instagram user noted, “Me every day, except no jets are involved.” Finally, a fourth follower deduced, “But jet lag in Korea is better than being awake somewhere else.”

Joanna Gaines’ mother, Nan, was born and raised in South Korea. Gaines discussed how, in adulthood, she had embraced her heritage after being bullied for it as a child.

In a watershed 2022 admission to People Magazine, Gaines revealed that she struggled with the Korean side of her identity for many years. Her father, Jerry Stevens, is Lebanese and German.

Gaines spoke about growing up in Kansas with sisters Teresa and Mary Kay. The sisters were bullied because they brought traditional Korean food to school for lunch.

“We were literally the only Asians in our entire school,” Gaines recalled. “It was deeply personal because that was half of my story. I realized if this isn’t accepted, maybe I need to hide it and play more into the other side of who I am.”

Gaines began gaining a new perspective on her heritage after leaving her small town for a college internship in New York City. “I saw more people that looked like me than ever before,” she says.

She continued, “I left understanding the beauty and uniqueness of Korean culture. For the first time, I felt whole, like this is fully who I am, and I’m proud of it.”
