Whitney Way Thore Is ‘Freaking Out’ About Turning 40 in New Season of ‘My Big Fat Fabulous Life’ [Interview]

Whitney Way Thore is facing a milestone birthday and taking stock of where she is now – and where she hopes to be – in the new season of TLC’s My Big Fat Fabulous Life.

With her 40th birthday looming on the horizon, Thore is ready to say goodbye to her 30s in style with a big trip to sunny Spain. But as she looks forward to the next decade and continues to mourn the death of her beloved mother, she’s also in a reflective mood.

“It’s actually a really big impact on me,” Thore said of turning 40 during an interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “And I think it’s unfortunate because I don’t want to be one of the stereotypical women freaking out about being 40, being single, and being childless. But I am definitely freaking out about it.”

Thore is an outspoken advocate for body positivity. She compared confronting society’s expectations for how women should be in their 40s to dealing with how she is treated as a fat woman.

“There are a lot of similarities with being fat,” she said. ”There’s a societal expectation of what fat women are and what fat women aren’t. And it’s the same thing with being 40. Like, all of a sudden there are perceptions and judgments and things placed on you by society. And that’s been difficult.”

Transitioning to middle age might not be easy, but Thore is approaching it with her usual good humor. She’s focused on the things that bring her happiness rather than dwelling on the negative.

“I think you’ve got to find the things that give you joy,” she said. “And I tried to do that this season, getting back into some dance classes and things like that.”

Finding that joy also means not letting other people’s ideas of where she should be get in her head.

“I just need to take all of that same work that I did about being fat and apply that to what society expects of me as a 40-year-old woman,” Thore said. “And maybe I don’t fit that mold. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t have a life that’s worth living and things to find joy in and excitement and to be optimistic about.”

Last season on My Big Fat Fabulous Life, Thore got the shock of a lifetime when she learned her father, Glenn Thore, had a secret daughter named Angie. Season 12 will highlight the growing relationship between Thore and her newfound relatives, including Angie’s daughter Jamie.

“We’ll see Angie in this season. We’ll see the whole family this season,” Thore promised. “My niece Jamie gets married, and so that was really fun. And I try to keep up with her, like, 25-year-old bridesmaids, which is difficult,” she added with a laugh.

Thore is also still mourning the death of her beloved mother, Barbara “Babs” Thore, who died in December 2022. The wounds from that loss are still raw.

“With my mom. I’m definitely still grieving. I think I’m actually having, like, delayed, grieving. It’s very difficult,” she said.

One thing that gives Thore comfort is knowing how much her mother meant to My Big Fat Fabulous Life fans.

“I still get messages every day about my mom,” she said, tearing up. “And people say, either, ‘Your mom is so wonderful. She reminds me of my mom.’ Or they say, ‘I didn’t have a mom. And your mom was like a mother to me.’ And I think, what a powerful, amazing woman to be able to mother people through a television screen.”

“It’s it’s so interesting to me how she is just able to be so amazing to so many people, all over the world,” Thore added. “I mean, who gets that? Who has that opportunity? So it’s just something I’m really grateful for … I miss her. I miss her a lot.”

My Big Fat Fabulous Life premieres Tuesday, July 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TLC.

Maks Chmerkovskiy may have made his mark on television as a Dancing with the Stars pro, but the current So You Think You Can Dance judge is much more than that. In an exclusive for Showbiz Cheat Sheet, Chmerkovskiy reveals that philanthropy holds just as big a place in his heart as dance, saying “it just makes sense” to give back.

One of the most important elements of Maks Chmerkovskiy’s life is philanthropy. He finds great satisfaction in helping others.

“Since I started DWTS, we were invited to all these events, like the ESPYS and the ESPYS Celebrity Golf Classic. Its a great thing,” Maks shared.

He continued, “For me, it was like I had finally made it. In my mature years, it became very important to me to go and give back. It’s something I wanted to attach myself to because of how they give back to others.”

Realizing he has a public platform, Chmerkovskiy consciously uses it for good. Therefore, he spends much of his time aligning himself with organizations that can make a life-changing difference.

“The ESPYS Golf Classic is all about the V Cancer Research Foundation. As a 40-plus-year-old, I have many personal connections with the disease, so being a part of this event makes sense,” Maks revealed.

“And 100% of the funds raised go to cancer research. I love these types of initiatives; they make me happy. It’s rooted in my DNA to give back,” he continued.

“I won’t plant a tree, I need to plant the forest. I want to make sure I am part of the solution.”

Lending his name and face to the ESPY’s Celebrity Golf Classic is one thing. However, Maks Chmerkovskiy is also participating in the event in another way; his vodka line, Tetya KAPA, is also a sponsor of the yearly cancer research event.

The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano. He was a legendary North Carolina State University basketball coach and ESPN commentator.

The Foundation has awarded more than $353 million in cancer research grants. The event proceeds will benefit cancer research funded by the V Foundation and runs from July 7-12 in Thousand Oaks, California.

However important Chmerkovskiy’s philanthropic work is, he always makes time for his first love: dance. He recently starred on So You Think You Can Dance as a judge, utilizing his skillset in a different way.

Early in 2024, Maks Chmerkovskiy had the opportunity to use his decades of dance knowledge to assist up-and-coming performers as a judge during Season 18 of the competition series So You Think You Can Dance. He sat alongside JoJo Siwa and Allison Holker on the panel.

Where he utilized his dance skills for 17 seasons as a Dancing with the Stars pro, this time, Chmerkovskiy had the chance to “sit down” and share his experiences and help others start their professional dance careers.

“I had a great time,” he revealed. “It was the opportunity to sit down. It was the chance to live up to the expectations I set for myself.”

However, he still needed the show’s producers to explain why his opinion would matter. He wanted to know exactly what was expected of him as a judge on the series.

“When I was offered this position, I kept asking can you please tell me why me? What is my job? They said that because of your experience and your job when asked, you say what you feel is right.”

“My opinion came from a physical reaction to watching someone dance. I’m not there saying I’m correct. I am saying this was how I reacted to the performance and my understanding and experience as a dancer,” he continued.

Maks Chmerkovskiy is married to DWTS pro Peta Murgatroyd. They are parents to sons Shai and Rio and will welcome a third son in a matter of weeks.

The American South is known for its music, its food, and its hospitality. But beneath that charming surface lurks something darker. Oxygen True Crime’s Sins of the South exposes the shadowy side of life below the Mason-Dixon line.

In this exclusive clip from the show’s June 30 episode, a retired detective recalls his first impressions of a bloody scene outside of a Nashville recording studio, where a shooting has left one man gravely injured and the other dead.

Nashville cops confront a scene unlike any other

When officers arrived at Evergreen Records Recording Studio on March 9, 1989, they were greeted by a brutal and disturbing crime scene.

“One of the patrol officers, he’d never seen anything like it. There was so much blood,” says writer Jesse Sublett.

One victim, 21-year-old Sammy Sadler, was still alive and was transported to a local hospital. But it was too late for the other man, 23-year-old Kevin Hughes. He was lying in the middle of the street, dead as the result of multiple gunshots to the head.

A violent murder and a challenging crime scene

Detectives on the scene tried to piece together what had happened to the two young men. Their job would not be easy.

“Kevin Hughes had a hand wound and head wound,” recalls retired Nashville PD Detective Bill Pridemore. “And then naturally we had the bullets from Kevin’s body and the one they found on the ground.”

Unfortunately, the location of the shooting meant there was not a lot of forensic evidence that could help point police to a perpetrator.

“But there’s no footprints,” Pridemore explains. “There’s no tire marks. It’s on asphalt, all concrete through there. So there’s no place to leave any type of physical evidence.”

People who lived near the crime scene reported seeing Sadler stumble out of a parked car before he made his way to a nearby apartment building, where a resident administered first aid and called the police. Witnesses then watched as the killer, who was wearing a ski mask and had a limp, chased Hughes down the street, fired multiple rounds, and fled.

So, who killed Kevin Hughes? And did his job at a Nashville music magazine have something to do with his death? The answers would take years to emerge – and when they did, the truth would shock everyone.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: I understand you’ve had a house in the Hamptons for years, and you recently built a new home. Why is the area so special to you?

Andy Cohen: I love the beach, and I have a lot of friends out there, and it’s a really fun, low-key, relaxed vibe. I think people believe the Hamptons is all just crazy parties. It’s really what you make of it.

Is your home a summer home or an all-year-round home?

AC: It’s all year, it’s ready. It’s pumping right now. Yeah, and the kids love it. They’re so happy. [Cohen is a father to two children: a son, Benjamin, and a daughter, Lucy].

What makes you so relaxed when you’re there?

AC: Oh, my God, it’s just the beach, it’s just the ocean. It’s like, it’s the place that, if I’m afforded the opportunity, I can close my eyes. I get out there, and I feel chilled out.

Although you have lived in the Hamptons for many years, this new home differs greatly from your previous one.

AC: I built it from scratch. I mean, it’s something I’ve never done. I’ve never built a house from scratch. It’s very … it’s really me. I mean, it’s my dream house. It’s my little Barbie Dream House, and it’s very indoor-outdoor, and it’s just the way that I want to live.

How do you manage a work/life balance with the kids, your friends, family, and work?

AC: I am very deadline-oriented. If I have something due, I get it done. I tick off the boxes, you know, do what needs to be done. And so because of that, you feel that you can shut the phone off.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: You host a podcast, and you do all these crazy reality shows everyone loves so much. You just dig your heels in and do it. Have you always been that way when it comes to work?

Andy Cohen: I have, but I do what seems fun or natural. It has to be organically interesting to me. That’s something I will admit to.

Did you ever believe that when you first started in this business, you would end up being known as the king of reality TV?

AC: That’s very kind. No, absolutely not, absolutely not.

Lopez and Affleck were first engaged in 2002 but called it quits on their relationship in 2004. After reconnecting nearly 20 years later, they tied the knot in 2022. Now, a divorce attorney suggests that the couple may have already signed the papers to separate.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have reportedly hit a rough patch in their marriage and are headed for divorce. The couple hasn’t verified the rumors. But sources say that Affleck now lives in a $100,000 monthly rental while Lopez stays in their $60 million home they now want to sell. Additionally, Affleck reportedly confides in his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, for guidance.

Jacqueline Newman, a managing partner at the matrimonial law firm Berkman Bottger Newman & Schein LLP, said Lopez and Affleck dropped “hints” that they had already signed papers to end their marriage.

“It is not looking good for Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck,” Newman said in a statement provided to Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “It feels like they are trying to let the public down easy by dropping hints about the marriage ending but not yet officially announcing it. If it is, in fact, over, I would bet that the terms are already worked out and the papers are already signed. The actual legal part of the divorce will be easy, as they undoubtedly have a tight prenuptial agreement, and it was a short-term marriage. It is the court to public opinion which will be the tougher divorce.”

Do Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have a prenup? It’s unclear what the couple chose to do in 2022 when they tied the knot. However, one source said they decided against a prenup, according to OK! Magazine. At the time, they had a reported combined net worth of $550 million. Lopez brought in $400 million, and Affleck brought in $150 million.

According to The Mirror, a source told Heat that Lopez and Affleck considered a postnuptial agreement in 2023 after tying the knot the year prior. The couple was reportedly experiencing “tension” at the time.

“Jen’s got more to lose than Ben, and while she trusts in her gut that he wouldn’t try to take her to the cleaners, there’s a ‘better safe than sorry’ vibe, especially with so much on the line,” the source alleged.

“It’s not uncommon for couples in Hollywood to arrange these types of formal documents a year or two into their marriage,” the source continued. “So, they’re being sensible, but it still isn’t an ideal scenario off the back of so much tension and trouble.”

“It’s no wonder there’s speculation about the divorce rumors surrounding her and Ben, [which] could have been created to distract from her career downfall,” Riaz opined. “It is not uncommon for celebrities to face speculation and rumors, particularly during challenging times in their careers. Divorce rumors or personal life distractions can sometimes be used as a strategy to divert attention from any professional setbacks.”

Navigating relationships is tough. But navigating a relationship when one partner is behind bars is a special kind of difficult. WE tv’s reality TV series Love During Lockup follows couples who are trying to make a romance work despite the obstacle of incarceration.

In this exclusive clip from the show’s May 24 episode, Ayonna prepares to visit her boyfriend Jamahl, who is in prison. Meanwhile, she’s dealing with her own legal problems stemming from a charge of driving under the influence.

Ayonna, an exotic dancer from Pennsylvania, is dating Jamahl, her former best friend’s ex-boyfriend. But even though she and Jamahl are in a relationship, they haven’t connected in person since they started dating. That’s about to change.

“Me and Jamahl have not been able to see each other since we’ve officially been together. So this is super-important,” Ayonna explains in the clip.

As Ayonna and her friend head to the prison for the visit, Ayonna vents about her own troubles with the law. Recently, she was charged with a DUI after an officer pulled her over for speeding and realized she was driving while high. In last week’s episode, Ayonna lashed out at a judge who refused to allow her to feed her daughter during a virtual court hearing. The judge threatened her with jail, house arrest, and probation if she didn’t comply with the court’s rules.

“You really had to hear this judge,” she complains to her friend. “Like, I really hate these people. Like, they really feel like you’ve got all this f*cking power because you went to school and got this corny *ss piece of paper that says you’re this person.”

Ayonna’s friend worries she’s not facing reality

Ayonna’s friend gently tries to suggest that there might be better ways of approaching her situation.

“Just remember you set the tone,” her friend tells her. “Girl, you don’t ever think about solution B until you’re flat on your face.”

Ayonna’s aggressive attitude isn’t unusual, her friend explains.

“Reality doesn’t click to her,” she says in a solo interview. “I don’t know how else to put it. That’s just how Ayonna’s always been. It’s a coping mechanism. She really feels like if she doesn’t think about what the worst is to come, it might not happen.”

“I really hope that she stops thinking like that,” the friend adds. “Because she’s just going to get herself into trouble again.”

There have been a few reports painting a troubling picture of Lopez’s and Affleck’s marriage. These rumors swelled when Lopez attended the 2024 Met Gala without Affleck by her side. Affleck’s spokesperson confided that the actor’s absence was due to a scheduling conflict. However, that didn’t do too much to quell the rumors. In fact, the divorce conversation only intensified after reports hit that Affleck had moved out of his and Lopez’s house.

But as recently as two days ago, Lopez and Affleck were spotted out and about as close as ever. Affleck and Lopez were caught driving around Los Angeles, seemingly in good spirits.

Recent sightings of Lopez and Affleck being together only reaffirmed the belief that they were in a good place, according to body language expert Darren Stanton.

“Right off the bat, we’ve seen J.Lo and Ben Affleck out together. What I’ve noticed is they’re very comfortable in each other’s skin,” Stanton tells Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “They’ve been together in their relationship for a long time, both off and on. So therefore, what I’m looking for is how comfortable are these two in each other’s space. But as it happens, very comfortable,” he said.

Stanton highlighted the PDA Lopez and Affleck often still share in public when they’re together as a good sign.

“We often see them holding hands, J.Lo will have her arm tucked into Ben, her hands in his pockets. So, they’re very comfortable, and it shows they’ve been in this relationship for a very long time. And they’ve also got deep rapport, and they’re very much in love,” he said.

With that said, Stanton seems confident that Lopez and Affleck will be together for quite some time. As far as he’s concerned, there’s no divorce on the horizon.

What might also be a good sign was that Lopez was recently seen wearing her ring. The singer walked the red carpet for the premiere of her new Netflix movie Atlas. She arrived in style wearing a white crop top with no sleeves or straps and a long black mermaid skirt that swept across the floor when she moved.

Despite her elegant and majestic appearance, Lopez’s wedding ring drew all the attention as if it was the only thing she was wearing. She didn’t flash Affleck’s gift to the crowd, but many took the ring’s appearance as a subtle but loud declaration of her relationship status with Affleck.

However, there have been reports that Affleck still hasn’t been seen with his wedding ring. It was alleged that the accessory was missing when Affleck first allegedly moved out of his and Lopez’s home, too. The Daily Mail noted that Affleck was on a film set this time. With that in mind, Affleck not wearing his ring may also be due to something as simple as a production issue. But only time will tell if this sight will hold any significance.

Despite the PDAs of affection and unity, reports continue to trickle out about a few issues the couple might have. Very recently, a source for E.T. claimed that Affleck felt Lopez’s expectations might be too high. And as much as they cared about each other, these high expectations were a recurring problem in their relationship.

“Ben feels like Jen has a hard time feeling satisfied and that’s one of the issues they’re facing. Ben is one of the only people who feels comfortable enough to be honest and real with Jen. It’s part of why Jen loves him, but also why she’s upset with him,” the source said.

However, the source further asserted that this didn’t mean Affleck and Lopez were anywhere near renouncing their wedding vows.

“Ben and Jen are going through normal problems and nothing scandalous is going on,” the source added.

A video of Sean “Diddy” Combs made public recently has left anyone who watched it shocked and disgusted by what they saw.

The video released by CNN is from 2016. It shows the music mogul running out of a hotel room with a towel around his waist as he chases after his girlfriend-at-the-time Cassie Ventura, who is attempting to leave. Before she can get onto the elevator, Diddy grabs her from behind and throws her to the ground. He then kicks her and begins to gather her belongings to bring her back to the room before he kicks her again while she is motionless on the ground. Moments later, Diddy drags Cassie back toward the room before letting go of her sweatshirt.

In another instance, he shoves Cassie and can be seen picking up a vase from a table in the hallway and throwing it in her direction.

Less than 48 hours after the video was seen around the world, the Bad Boy Records founder admitted to what he could no longer deny and apologized for his actions. But many are questioning if he was being sincere or not. Here’s what body language expert Darren Stanton told Showbiz Cheat Sheet about Diddy’s apology message.

What a body language noticed about Diddy’s apology

Stanton is a body language and behavioral expert with a degree in psychology. He previously worked as a police officer and used his expertise to uncover the truth when interviewing hundreds of suspects. He later moved into media and TV as a consultant and has been dubbed the “Human Lie Detector.” Now, Stanton has analyzed the footage Diddy released of his apology and is sharing why he wasn’t being authentic.

“The direction where people look with their eyes is really interesting. P. Diddy was looking to his right, so we have to reverse that because it’s on camera,” Stanton explained, adding that the other way of looking reveals that he’s “making it up. He’s not remembering what he wants to say from the heart; he’s making it up because it sounds right. There’s inauthenticity in terms of what he’s saying.

“Also, it seems a little bit too rehearsed; almost like an actor that’s rehearsed what he wants to say to sound good or remorseful. The other thing is the way he mentioned that he sought professional help. We saw a quiver at the bottom of his lip and that tells me that there’s an emotional shift. He’s trying to really convey that [to the camera]. And lastly, we saw a chin thrust which is a sign of dominance or arrogance [to say] ‘I’m really important.’ People that are trying to be remorseful and say ‘sorry’ and be genuine don’t do that.”

Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will not prosecute Diddy

Cassie previously filed a lawsuit against Diddy. It was settled out of court in November 2023 but what she alleged in that suit matches what was seen in the hotel surveillance.

Following the release of the video to the public the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office issued a statement via Instagram that read: “We find the images extremely disturbing and difficult to watch. If the conduct depicted occurred in 2016, unfortunately, we would be unable to charge as the conduct would have occurred beyond the timeline where a crime of assault can be prosecuted.

“As of today, law enforcement has not presented a case related to the attack depicted in the video against Mr. Combs, but we encourage anyone who has been a victim or witness to a crime to report it to law enforcement or reach out to our office for support from our Bureau of Victims Services.”

Was it self-defense, or was it murder? That’s the question at the heart of Oxygen True Crime’s Kill or Be Killed, which explores real and complex cases where the killer claims they had no choice but to kill. But not every perpetrator is genuinely innocent. While some might have resorted to violence in a desperate act of self-preservation, others are trying to cover up a vicious crime.

The May 18 episode of Kill or Be Killed digs into the case of a cosplay model named Melissa Turner who makes a frantic 911 call after she finds her boyfriend stabbed to death outside their home. Surveillance footage points detectives to the perpetrator, but the circumstances that led to his death are murky.

Did a cosplay model really kill her boyfriend?

In an exclusive clip, a woman named Stephanie Neal recounts a conversation she and Melissa had after Melissa was released on bail.

On the night her boyfriend Matthew Trussler died, he had told Melissa he was going to kill himself, according to Stephanie.

“He did something that made her scared enough to try to grab the knife from him,” Stephanie says. “She had a big cut on her palm where she grabbed the blade. At some point, he starts to choke her. She hits her head. She hits him on the back a couple of times with the knife.”

“He lets her go, and then he cut himself in the kitchen, crawled out the window and bled out” she continues.

A forensic investigation yields surprising evidence

After the altercation with Matthew, an injured Melissa “staggered to her office chair and passed out,” Melissa’s attorney John Trevana says in the clip.

Police investigating the scene uncovered some surprising evidence. They did find blood on the chair in the office. But it belonged only to Melissa, not to her boyfriend.

“It wasn’t a mixture,” Trevana says. “It was Melissa Turner’s blood on the chair in the area where her head could have been laying. She did get whacked in the head.”

Stephanie confirms that she felt a bump on her friend’s head. But when she asked Melissa if she’d sought medical attention, she said she had not.

That lack of medical records for Melissa on the night in question would prove to be an important issue in the case.

“If the police had given her medical treatment, we would have probably had some more supportive evidence,” Trevana says. “But we were limited to the blood spot.”
