Netflix: ‘Firefly Lane’ concludes with season 2 part 2 on April 27

The long-awaited final Installment of Firefly Lane comes out in April 2023, but not until the end of the month. That gives fans plenty of time to read the books on which the Netflix series is based and give season 1 and the first half of two a rewatch. Moved up from the original June release date, Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 2 drops on Netflix on April 27.

Showtime to release a ‘Waco’ follow-up series April 14

In 2018, Waco starring Taylor Kitsch as David Koresh premiered on the Paramount Network. On April 14, Showtime will release Waco: The Aftermath, a five-episode limited series that focuses on the fallout of the Waco disaster, including the trials of the surviving members of the Branch Davidian sect and the rise of homegrown terrorist Timothy McVeigh.

TV shows coming to Prime Video in April 2023

Prime Video will release The Boarding School: Las Cumbers Season 3, a reboot of the popular El Internado, on April 7. Also coming to Prime Video in April is Dead Ringers (April 21) and Citadel (April 28).

‘Shrinking’ Is Getting the ‘Ted Lasso’ Treatment: Will There Be a Season 2?

Ted Lasso’s creators went into the series thinking it would be three seasons, and they’re doing the same with Shrinking. Aside from the Apple TV+ series coming to us from the minds of Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence, Shrinking shares something else with Ted Lasso. Here’s what we know about another season of Shrinking.

Is ‘Shrinking’ getting a season 2? It was pitched as a three-season show

Lawrence always has a plan for the stories he’s telling. “We pitched three seasons — the beginning, middle, and end,” he told Variety of Shrinking. “It does not have a sports season component to it the same way that that’s a function of the story. Like, ‘I wonder if they win or lose!'”

He didn’t say much about the plans for the future seasons of Shrinking, but one thing is for sure. Harrison Ford and Segel are in it for the long haul. “… You can tell actors that you’ve always wanted to work with, ‘If you give me three seasons, that’s fine if you want to split,'” he said. “So all I can tell you is that all the gang that we roped in for this one was down for doing that.”

Season 2 of Shrinking got the green light earlier in March 2023. Season 3 has yet to be confirmed, but the cast and showrunners are ready when it is.

‘Shrinking’ Season 1 finale ended on a cliffhanger — literally

One of the most surprising but subtle moments in the Shrinking Season 1 finale came when Grace (Heidi Garnder), one of Jimmy’s patients, pushes her abusive boyfriend off a cliff. This is certain to come up in season 2, as Grace’s boop-ing Donny (Tilky Jones) to his death was inspired by Jimmy’s unconventional therapy tactics.

Jimmy goes as far as to suggest to Grace, metaphorically of course: “Off the cliff! Bash them brains! Eat them up!” It will be interesting to see how Grace’s interpretation of this coping mechanism will impact Jimmy’s career in season 2.

Jessica Williams, who plays Jimmy’s colleague and romantic interest Gaby, was especially impressed with Gardner’s performance. “… I just thought, ‘Damn. Well, I hope we get a second season because I would love to unpack that,'” Williams told the outlet.

Williams has big expectations for her role in Shrinking. “As for Gaby, I want somebody to take care of her,” said Williams.

“I want more combos. I want more scenes with Harrison [Paul, who is based on Phil Stutz]— I think Gaby and Paul are amazing together — and more scenes with Michael [who plays Brian] and more scenes with Luke [Sean] and Lukita [Alice] and Christa [Liz]. Like, I just want to just do more of this because everyone’s really bringing their A game. It’s really fun for me to play Gaby. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

For years, Gomez was seen primarily as a teen icon, a young woman who rose to fame on the Disney Channel before embarking on a hugely successful career in music. In a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, Gomez touched on how the release of the documentary changed her life. Specifically, the way that fans approach her in the street. She admitted that she’s glad that fans now see her with some dimension. “That was happening more, and I started to feel good because I wasn’t just this prop to people — like, ‘You’re so cute. Let’s take a picture.’ It was more than that. It was a conversation about mental health or courage or disappointment or loss. And I started to go, ‘This is paying off,’ because that’s what I want at the end of the day. I’d rather be remembered for my heart than anything else.”

Gomez also discussed how scared she was prior to the release of My Mind & Me. “I was terrified. But after the documentary came out, I started noticing people come up to me, and they weren’t like, ‘Oh, I want a picture of you.’ It was more like, ‘Hey, I appreciated that part where you said this,'” Gomez said. “Then I ended up having a five-minute conversation with someone about their journey.”

I don’t ever feel, even for five seconds, that I’m crazy. My thoughts tend to ruminate, but it’s up to me to be proud of who I am and to take care of myself.” These days, Gomez is one of the strongest celebrity advocates for mental health awareness and understanding.

Ted Lasso, Apple TV+’s hit series from Bill Lawrence, returned for season 3 on March 15. The series quickly became a standout for its humor, sincerity, and refreshing take on mental health when it premiered in 2020. Ted, played by Jason Sudeikis, spent much of the first two seasons of the show addressing his mental health, and now the cast has brought their “Believe” motto to the White House.

At first glance, Ted Lasso seems like a heartfelt show about a fish-out-of-water American football coach taking on a job across the pond coaching AFC Richmond. Sudeikis, in his role as the titular character, constantly has a smile on his face. However, as the show progresses, audiences learn about his mental health. Ted suffers a panic attack in the middle of a big game, and he hesitates to address the issue. Ultimately, Ted’s visits to the team therapist help him with his experience.

Overall, Ted Lasso does a wonderful job of normalizing getting help with one’s mental health. It also makes a point to show that someone’s outward appearance doesn’t necessarily represent what they might struggle with behind closed doors.

President Biden invited the ‘Ted Lasso’ cast to the White House for a discussion on mental health

On Monday, March 20, the cast of Ted Lasso appeared at the White House for a discussion on mental health. Sudeikis, along with costars Brett Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brendan Hunt, Toheeb Jimoh, Cristo Fernandez, Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris, and James Lance, took the podium for a conversation. Sudeikis discussed President Biden’s plan to make sure the public knows what tools and options are available to those seeking help for issues regarding their mental health.

Speaking at the press secretary’s podium, Sudeikis said, “No matter who you are, no matter where you live, no matter who you voted for, we all probably – I assume, we all know someone who has or had been that someone ourselves actually, that’s struggled, that’s felt isolated, that’s felt anxious, that has felt alone.”

He continued, “It’s actually one of the many things that, believe it or not, we all have in common as human beings.”

The ‘Believe’ sign made an appearance above an Oval Office door

Fans of Ted Lasso are very familiar with the blue and yellow sign spelling out the word “Believe” above Ted’s office in the series. Ted makes it a priority for the players on his team to put their faith in themselves and their ability to play at the top levels. Despite losing several games, and Ted gaining control of the team while they were in a huge slump, the players eventually began to believe in themselves, and the future of AFC Richmond begins to turn around.

Sure, it’s a feel-good show laced with enough humor to keep everyone laughing. However, Ted Lasso addresses mental health in a way that hasn’t been done before. And for that, we’ll continue to believe… in Ted, in AFC Richmond, and in everything else that comes along with the series.

How Jonah Hill’s Therapist Phil Stutz Impacted the Storytelling in Apple TV+’s ‘Shrinking’

Jason Segel’s Shrinking doesn’t star Jonah Hill, but the Apple TV+ series loosely connects to the actor. Shrinking stars Segel as Jimmy Laird and follows his grief journey. Along the way, we meet Jimmy’s friends, family, and colleagues, including Harrison Ford’s Phil. Ford’s role in the Apple TV+ series directly correlates to Hill’s real-life therapist Phil Stutz.

Harrison Ford worked with Jonah Hill’s therapist Phil Stutz to create Paul

Phil is Jimmy’s mentor and colleague in Shrinking. The character is based on real-life therapist Stutz, who happens to be Hill’s therapist and the subject of his 2022 Netflix documentary Stutz.

“Harrison Ford … met with Phil Stutz, the therapist who inspired his character,” Shrinking production designer Cabot McMullen told Showbiz Cheat Sheet via email. Like the fictional Paul, Stutz Is diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system.

“He was excited to share many valuable details drawn from Mr. Stutz’s real-life routines at work and some physical workarounds he devised to alleviate some of his Parkinson’s symptoms,” McMullen elaborated. With the insight Ford gathered from Stutz, McMullen created an office that made sense for someone with diagnosed Parkinson’s.

“We added a credenza and chair with sturdy arms that Paul could do push-ups on to loosen up his arms after a session,” McMullen described. “We also added artworks and drawings inspired by Mr. Stutz’s interest in Jungian philosophies.”

‘Shrinking’ and ‘Stutz’ share another connection

Stutz gives viewers a therapy session of their own. The Netflix documentary has been praised for offering viewers mental health tools they might not be able to access otherwise because of the cost of therapy or a lack of insurance.

In Shrinking, Paul serves as the same sort of lifeline to Jimmy’s daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell), who is grieving the loss of her mother and trying to maintain a semblance of a normal teenage life while her father grieves in his own way. Like to the tools Stutz gives his patients, Paul advises Alice to allow herself 15 minutes a day to cry as hard as she wants — a practice he observes with his Parkinson’s.

Hill and Stutz share the same kind of communication style Paul and Alice do; one that’s often comical but always heartfelt. Whether or not this was a conscious choice on behalf of Shrinking‘s creators is unclear, but it sure feels intentional.

Hill’s Netflix documentary looks at the events that impacted Stutz’s life most, including the death of his three-year-old brother when he was nine and his Parkinson’s diagnosis, all of which helped him forge his therapeutic principles. “I’m making this movie because I want to give therapy to as many people as possible,” Hill says in the film.

The wait is almost over! Ted Lasso Season 3 hits Apple TV+ on March 15, and the streamer recently released the full-length trailer. Fans last caught up with Ted and the AFC Richmond football team toward the end of 2021, and several relationships were up in the air. Now, the Ted Lasso Season 3 trailer hints that Nate might be loving his new villainous persona more than anyone expected.

Nate went from meek to mean in ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 2

Throughout the second season of Ted Lasso, Nate, played by Nick Mohammed, who began the series as exceedingly humble, underwent a gradual, yet villainous, transformation. After Ted’s (Jason Sudeikis) panic attack in the middle of a big game, he tried to play it off as some simple stomach issues. However, Nate ratted out the real reason behind Ted’s sudden departure – an anxiety attack – to reporter Trent Crim (James Lance).

Trent published the article, which caused Ted to receive backlash from AFC Richmond fans. The season concluded with Nate accepting a job offer from AFC Richmond’s competitors, West Ham United. Meanwhile, Keeley (Juno Temple) and Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) prepared for a long period of separation while Keeley pursues a new career.

Set to the tune of The Rolling Stone’s “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” the Ted Lasso Season 3 trailer features all of our favorite characters walking back onto the field at AFC Richmond. Fans see catch glimpses of Nate as he coaches West Ham United, but always with a scowl plastered on his face. He clearly hasn’t moved past his anger at Ted, Beard (Brendan Hunt), and Roy Kent.

The trailer also shows Keeley grappling with the responsibilities of running her own PR agency. However, most viewers likely breathed a sigh of relief to see Keeley and Roy cuddling in bed together.

Apple TV+’s official synopsis reads, “In the wake of Nate’s contentious departure from Richmond, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) steps up as assistant coach, alongside Beard (Brendan Hunt). Meanwhile, while Ted (Jason Sudeikis) deals with pressures at work, he continues to wrestle with his own personal issues back home, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) is focused on defeating Rupert and Keeley (Juno Temple) navigates being the boss of her own PR agency. Things seem to be falling apart both on and off the pitch, but Team Lasso is set to give it their best shot anyway.”

New season, new time slot

Ted Lasso Season 3 is set to return on March 15, 2023, as announced by Apple TV+. However, the new season will have a different time slot than previous seasons, which typically released new episodes on Fridays. In a move to experiment with a mid-week launch, Apple TV+ has scheduled the new season to premiere on Wednesdays. New episodes will drop weekly, beginning on March 15.

How ‘The Reluctant Traveler’ Made Eugene Levy Empathize With Endangered Animals

At 76, Eugene Levy is still trying new things. His Apple TV+ travel show The Reluctant Traveler took Levy to eight exotic destinations. Some of his favorites included dog sledding and feeding rhinos in South Africa. The latter, specifically, gave him a newfound affinity for endangered animals.

Before ‘The Reluctant Traveler’ Eugene Levy never desired to visit South Africa

As Levy explained, he initially said no to a travel show. Given his resistance, Apple named it The Reluctant Traveler. So, Levy went along with the show, but otherwise would never have instigated a trip to South Africa.

“South Africa for example, was a location I never really had a keen interest in going to,” Levy said. “Again, not an outdoorsy person, didn’t really love the idea of going on safari because making a trip that far just to see these animals that I’d already seen on TV, I know what they look like. Do I need to see them roaming around in a big field out there somewhere?”

Meeting endangered species in South Africa was moving

The South Africa episode of The Reluctant Traveler took Levy to Kruger National Park. Levy was moved by the peril endangered species face.

And finally, the Maldives, “While I can appreciate the beauty of the deep blue sea, if you ever see me in it, send help because chances are I’m not waving, I’m drowning.”

Getting to the Kruger National Park in South Africa, the shocking thing to me was I all of a sudden grew an affinity for not only the landscape of this country but the creatures that were in the landscape. I never thought I would feel that. The sense of danger that these animals are in on a day to day basis from poachers and hunters, I felt it in my gut being there. Going to a rhino conservancy and seeing these orphan rhinos and what’s happened to them and how they’re being tended to and how almost extinct now the rhino population is. That’s something that affected me that I truly never thought would affect me before I had this show, certainly before I traveled there. Eye openers for me.

People stood out to Eugene Levy in ‘The Reluctant Traveler’

Aside from the animals Levy saw, he met locals in each episode. Part of being a reluctant traveler was Levy admits to being more introverted. He appreciated learning how to open up with friendly strangers.

“I’m enjoying the people that I’m meeting,” Levy said. “Just the ability of interacting with people, that has always been a thing with me. I’ve always been on the quieter side of things, don’t initiate a lot. I really loved the conversations that I had with all these people at all these different locations. Those were the most memorable. That’s what I took home in my memory bank for the most part.”

Aside from the animals and people, not every Reluctant Traveler experience was a winner either.

“If you have a natural sense of adventure then you’re going to love everything you’re doing,” Levy said. “You’re going to try every dish that’s put in front of you to eat, you’re going to try it. You’re going to sample it. I’m still at a point where there’s things I wouldn’t even sample. I would just say, ‘No, thank you.’ So I still have a ways to go.”

The Apple TV+ travel series The Reluctant Traveler sends Eugene Levy to eight exotic locations. The show was so-called because Levy actually said no to it. That’s how reluctant he was. Now that he’s done it, Levy admits there are a couple activities he will never do again.

The first ‘Reluctant Traveler’ activity Eugene Levy rules out

After returning home from The Reluctant Traveler, Levy can safely say he’s definitely not going back to two activities. Here’s one he already ruled out.

“I’m becoming less reluctant,” Levy said. “There are things still in my gut, I’m saying, ‘Well, do I really truly love doing this?’ And be honest with yourself and the answer is no, I don’t. Would I go on a night hike in Costa Rica again? I don’t think I need to do that.”

Levy admits he’s not an outdoorsman. So just because he experienced the Costa Rican forest doesn’t mean it won him over.

“I would never want to do that forest thing again,” Levy said. “I’m truly not an outdoorsy person. I probably never will be but the fact that I’m trying things I think is a good thing for me.”

The second activity he never needs to do again

Some of The Reluctant Traveler destinations were popular vacation spots like Venice or Tokyo. Others were intentionally exotic, like South Africa and Finland in winter. Levy has sworn off future frozen activities too.

“Would I go ice fishing in the Arctic?” Levy said. “No, don’t think I need to do that. I didn’t truly in my gut love what I was doing but I’m glad I did it so I can say yeah, I’ve been ice fishing in the arctic. But as a gut level enjoyment factor, I would say I tried it. I didn’t care for it.”

‘The Reluctant Traveler’ helped Eugene Levy open up

Levy did share some activities he enjoyed, like feeding rhinos and dog sledding. But, the greatest benefit he saw to The Reluctant Traveler was helping him socialize with friendly strangers.

The fact that I’m getting to talk to people in different countries and cultures that I probably wouldn’t have chatted up if I had been traveling on my own, is a good thing. It’s a good thing for me because it’s something I wouldn’t have done. Not because I don’t want to do it. I’m just innately a shy person. Always have been and there’s probably a little insecurity running in my body somewhere that I’m not a gregarious personality so I would chime in with a conversation if someone else was initiating it but that’s been a good thing for me. So I’m not completely over the reluctant thing but I’m glad I’m giving it a shot. I’m glad I’m trying things whether I like them or whether I don’t. At least I’m giving it a go.
