Speaking to Collider, Oyelowo described the show as a cinematic experience spread across six episodes. He also explained how his character’s story has been “whitewashed out of history.”

“So Bass Reeves is a character who the Lone Ranger was actually based on. But unfortunately, he was whitewashed out of history,” Oyelowo explained.

Bass Reeves, the inspiration for the Lone Ranger, had an extraordinary life. He was born into slavery and later fought in the Civil War before fleeing to Native American territories.

He mastered indigenous languages and skills, all of which he used in his law enforcement career, boasting over 3,000 arrests.

Oyelowo suggested that the miniseries format allows viewers to engage with extended storytelling, much like old epic movies. But in a more palatable format for modern audiences.

“Growing up in Texas, I heard a lot of stories about Bass Reeves,” Feehan stated. “Somewhere in my childhood, that myth of Bass took firm root in my consciousness and never left.”

Feehan expressed a profound desire to honor the complex legacy of Bass Reeves, touching on the shared human experiences that connect us all.

While on set, Costner ate food from Yellowstone‘s celebrity chef Gabriel “Gator” Guilbeau, who cooked for the actors. So, what did Costner eat? Here’s what Gator revealed.

What does Kevin Costner eat while on the ‘Yellowstone’ set?

Chef Gabriel “Gator” Guilbeau is featured in Yellowstone and is the chef for the actors in the series. He has a lot of mouths to feed (and food preferences to consider). This, of course, also means he prepared meals for Yellowstone star Kevin Costner during his time on the show as John Dutton.

So, what did Costner like to eat? Gator told Delish that Costner loved his famous pineapple bourbon bread pudding for dessert, as did several other actors from the series. But Costner won’t eat just anything that Gator creates.

“Kevin is a very picky eater,” Gator said. “In no way, shape, or form would he ever eat grilled octopus,” he added, referring to one scene in Yellowstone where the chef brings charred octopus out for the Duttons to eat.

“Considering that this is a man that, before he met me, I think solely may have lived off of canned chili and hot dogs,” Gator added, “it was a lot for me to put a Mediterranean diet in front of him.”

According to the chef, Costner always has room for dessert. Whenever Costner saw that Gator was creating something sweet, he’d motion for the chef to come to his camp. “When he smells stuff like this cooking, I always get the gesture to come on over. I’ll bring him a nice dessert with a big scoop of ice cream.”

“Kevin always likes to tell me how he’s on a diet and off the sugar, and then he’ll ask me to make an apple pie pretty much the same day, usually,” Gator stated. “Kevin may or may not have a sweet tooth.”

Aside from dessert, Costner likely eats plenty of meals and snacks created by the chef. A behind-the-scenes clip shows Yellowstone actor Ian Bohen talking about Gator’s truck that supplied “breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and snacks in between.”

Gator also said he likes “reading the crew” when it comes to what to cook that day. “If people are feeling blue, they want chicken noodle soup,” he stated. “That first day of fall, the cinnamon comes out, the nutmeg comes out. You can tell what they want.”

Yellowstone’s John Dutton III hails from a lineage of ranchers, born and bred in Montana. Although his exact birthdate remains undisclosed, it’s safe to assume he’s roughly about 60 years old.

“For Kayce, more specifically, he’s obviously married the enemy in a weird way. Almost a Romeo and Juliet type story of these people who were kind of twin souls who feel like they need to be together, but everything around them would suggest that they shouldn’t,” Grimes shared. “That’s sort of what constitutes his whole arc in this series.”

When it comes to modifications, language takes the lead. But CBS has its work cut out on that front. We don’t even want to know how often they’ll hit the bleep button to filter out swear words.

As for the skin in the show, Yellowstone’s free-spirited take on nudity is a touch too bold for CBS. Fans can expect some artful blurring, reminiscent of how Peacock handled Beth’s notable Season 1 scene for YouTube.

That said, language and nudity aren’t the only two things CBS will need to change before Yellowstone airs.

Taylor Sheridan’s epic western won’t be the same on network television

CBS has its work cut out with adjusting the timings for Yellowstone. While most network dramas neatly wrap up in around 42 minutes, Yellowstone episodes can be as brief as 37 or stretch up to 92 minutes.

So CBS has two choices: play around with their schedule or snip some bits here and there.

One possible snip? Maybe some of those long horse-riding scenes. It’s a smart way to save time without compromising the show’s essence too much.

Of course, we can’t imagine Yellowstone without its intense violence and drama. Yet, some of the more intense scenes, like the assault on Beth in season 2 or that intense moment with Wade’s brand in Season 3, might get a second look.

With these tweaks, Yellowstone on CBS will have a different feel. Fingers crossed, it remains just as captivating!

‘Yellowstone’ is coming to CBS (edits and all) this fall

CBS will introduce Yellowstone to a wider audience this fall, making it the perfect time for newcomers to jump aboard.

According to Deadline, the drama surrounding the Dutton family will start airing on CBS on September 17. It’ll take the prime slot right after some NFL action during Week 2 of the 2023 season. Just a heads up, the airing time might shuffle a bit, depending on CBS’s NFL schedule.

For those who missed the initial Yellowstone wave, this is your golden ticket to start from the very beginning of this Emmy-nominated series. And while we’re all eagerly awaiting fresh episodes from Sheridan, current industry strikes mean we’ll have to be content with reruns for a while.

The fourth season of the popular Western drama concluded with some intense twists. Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) took the life of his biological father, Garrett Randall (Will Patton), after discovering that he had orchestrated an attack on the Dutton family.

Meanwhile, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) exchanged vows in an unexpected and quick wedding. And Grimes’ character, Kayce, returned from a four-day, four-night spiritual quest.

Imagine anyone other than Kevin Costner as John Dutton on Yellowstone — seems inconceivable, right? Yet, at one point, another Hollywood heavyweight was primed for the role of the patriarch of the Dutton clan.

Kevin Costner almost lost his ‘Yellowstone’ role to another A-Lister

It is difficult to picture anyone other than Costner embodying the role of John Dutton in Yellowstone. Interestingly, there was a time when Robert Redford, best known as the Sundance Kid, was a prime contender for the role of the Dutton family head.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sheridan revealed that producers felt the project required a high-profile lead to secure a deal. But Sheridan and the producers weren’t exactly on the same page.

The Yellowstone creator proposed Costner for the role, but the higher-ups could not envision him in the part. They countered with Redford. They even told Sheridan they would greenlight the project if he could get the acclaimed actor.

Sheridan then embarked on a trip to Sundance to meet Redford, who agreed to play John Dutton. The Yellowstone showrunner could not wait to tell the producers the good news.

“I drive to Sundance and spend the day with him, and he agrees to play John Dutton. I call the senior vice president in charge of production and say, ‘I got him!’ ‘You got who?’ ‘Robert Redford,’” Sheridan recalled. “’What?!’ ‘You said if I got Robert Redford, you’d greenlight the show.'”

Unfortunately, Sheridan didn’t get the expected response after sharing the news with the senior VP of production. One would assume the executives would have been overjoyed to have Redford, a notable celebrity, on board. But the reality was a bit different.

When Sheridan delivered the promising news, the executives told him they had been seeking a “Robert Redford type,” not Redford himself.

Sheridan didn’t disclose why the producers chose not to move forward with Redford. There could be several explanations.

Perhaps Redford’s salary demands exceeded what the show could pay. After all, the producers couldn’t predict that Yellowstone would eventually become such a massive hit.

Alternatively, the producers may not have felt that Redford was the right fit for the role. Regardless of the reason, in the end, Redford didn’t land the part – Costner did. And judging by the outcome, it seems they made the right call.

These celebrities said ‘no’ to Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Yellowstone’

Redford wasn’t the only famous face to pass on a Yellowstone role. Sheridan had initially approached Sam Elliott for a part, but Elliott turned him down.

On the bright side, this conversation paved the way for Elliott’s appearance in 1883, so it wasn’t an entire loss.

As reported by Taste of Country, country musician Cody Johnson was almost cast in Yellowstone’s fifth season. However, his touring schedule clashed with the show’s filming, and he could not commit.

The role initially intended for Johnson ultimately went to another country artist, Lainey Wilson.

Interestingly, Yellowstone wasn’t always destined for Paramount. Sheridan initially proposed the show to HBO. However, the network declined, claiming it was too unconventional for their Western genre lineup.

In hindsight, this decision appears to have been a misstep, as Yellowstone has found significant success with Paramount.
