Before he released solo music, Styles auditioned on The X Factor. He was added to One Direction, which recorded and released music for several years. That is, until Zayn Malik officially left the boy band on March 25, 2015, due to “stress.”

One Direction continued to release music as a four-piece group. That includes Made In the A.M., with original tracks “Drag Me Down,” “Perfect,” and “I Want to Write You a Song.”

It wasn’t until January 2016 that the group went on an extended hiatus, meaning a reunion is still a possibility. In the meantime, Styles released his self-titled album, earning his first Grammy Award for “Watermelon Sugar” in the Best Pop Solo Performance.

Harry Styles thought it was a ‘relief’ that One Direction was successful

In 2023, the artist took home the biggest Grammy Award of the night, Album of the Year, for Harry’s House. Months prior, he reflected on his time with the successful boy band.

“We’d go through real highs in the band and stuff, and it would always just feel like a relief,” Styles said during an interview with Rolling Stone. “Like, ‘Oh, we didn’t fail. That feels like a massive relief.’ I never really felt like I celebrated anything. And I had a great time. Like, truly.”

With One Direction’s popularity came world tours. This artist explained it was difficult to find a work-life balance, especially because he was a teenager at the time.

“You miss so many birthdays and stuff like that. And then eventually, it’s just assumed that you’re unable to be at stuff,” Styles said, according to the same article. “And I think that was one of the things where I was like, ‘Oh, I want to take a second to invest some more time into balancing my life out a little bit.’”

“This working is not everything about who I am, it’s something I do,” he added. “And I don’t want to be defined as a person necessarily by what I do all the time. I want to be able to put that down.”

Of course, most of the One Direction members have since branched out to release original music. Some of the songwriters even shared their support for one another. That’s true of Niall Horan and Liam Payne, who both congratulated Styles on his Album of the Year win.

“Harry,” Payne captioned one Instagram post, “you deserve every millisecond of that moment looking down smiling at the trophy you’ve earned. God bless you brother congratulations.”

During his Saturday Night Live monologue, Styles joked that he couldn’t remember the names of the other One Direction members, saying, “They’re my brothers. Niall [Horan], Liam [Payne], Louis [Tomlinson], and, uh — Ringo! Yeah, that’s it.”

Back in the early days of the Grammys, sub-three-minute winners of Record of the Year were not uncommon. In fact, from 1961 until 1968, every winner of the Record of the Year category ran less than three minutes. The shortest of them all — and the shortest winner in Grammys history — was Henry Mancini’s “Days of Wine and Roses,” which won in 1964 and measured just 2 minutes, 5 seconds long.

Artists emerged from two years of lockdown in 2022 with new albums ready to go and touring opportunities to promote their music. In the end, three artists in particular found immense success this year with their music: Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, and Harry Styles. Billboard released their year-end charts including their Top Artists chart, and these three stars were just a few of the major artists who made a splash this year.

Bad Bunny is the No. 1 artist of 2022

Bad Bunny’s fourth studio album Un Verano Sin Ti dominated not just the summer of 2022, but most of the year. The album spent a total of 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and has spent a total of 30 weeks on the chart so far, becoming the first album in Billboard 200 history to spend its first six months in the top two.

Several songs from the album were constant fixtures in the Billboard Hot 100. Tracks “Moscow Mule,” “Titi Me Preguntó,” “Después de la Playa,” and “Me Porto Bonito” all charted within the top 10.

Bad Bunny has earned several accolades throughout the year for his music, from Billboard’s No. 1s issue magazine cover to Latin Grammy Awards. The 2023 Grammy Awards are months away, but he’s already made history: Un Verano Sin Ti is nominated for Album of the Year, making it the first Spanish-language album in history to be up for the coveted award.

Taylor Swift is the No. 2 artist of the year

Taylor Swift seemingly never stops working. 2021 was marked by the release of two re-recorded albums, Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version), the latter continuing her momentum through 2022 thanks to the award-winning music video All Too Well: The Short Film. In October 2022, Swift returned, not with another re-recorded album, but with her tenth studio album, Midnights.

‘My Policeman’: Linus Roache Worried About Having to Imitate Harry Styles Until the Director Gave Him Advice

Harry Styles is trying his hand at acting in a big way. He’s not taking easy roles. One of his new roles, as Tom in My Policeman, presents a serious challenge.

In the film, Styles’ character is a gay policeman who is deep in the closet. When his wife becomes jealous of the love of his life, she exposes him, leading to his arrest. Styles’ performance has yet to be fully evaluated by critics, but his mere presence on set put some of his fellow actors on edge.

‘My Policeman’ was filmed during the pandemic

According to Variety, Styles’ co-star Emma Corrin was nervous to work with Styles, especially since she had to go into a sound booth with him to record some audio. It would be intimidating for almost anyone to go into a sound booth with Styles, who has been dominating the music charts for years.

Styles worked closely with Corrin and co-star David Dawson. The three play young versions of the policeman Tom, his wife Marion, and his lover Patrick. My Policeman jumps between time periods. Styles and his costars played the younger versions of Marion, Patrick, and Tom, while other actors played their older counterparts.

Because of the pandemic, the six actors playing Tom, Marion, and Patrick didn’t get a chance to rehearse together. Instead, they met over Zoom. Linus Roache played the older version of Tom, and he was particularly intimidated by Styles.

Styles is a well-known figure in entertainment. Fans know his mannerisms and his face well. That’s what made Roache nervous about portraying an older version of Tom in My Policeman. He told Variety that he and Styles had one on one Zoom calls so that he could try to make Tom a cohesive character in both time periods, but the director didn’t push him to imitate Styles completely.

The director told Roache, “‘We’re different people 40 years later, so don’t worry about trying to imitate your younger partner.’ It was a relief to be released from the person having to imitate Harry Styles.” Roache told Variety.

Even though Roache was not asked to mirror Styles’ unique mannerisms completely, he still had three weeks of one on one Zoom calls to nail down Tom’s character. That’s a long time for movie rehearsals. Delays because of the pandemic may have contributed to the long rehearsal time.

Long rehearsal time or not, the actors working on My Policeman took their roles seriously. Dawson even took the time to learn about gay bars during the 1950s.

Dawson plays Patrick’s younger self in My Policeman. He is gay himself and is likely familiar with modern gay bars, but he didn’t realize how important gay bars were in the 1950s. At the time, it was effectively illegal to be gay. That’s what the movie My Policeman is all about. But the LGBTQ community found safe haven in gay bars at the time.

Luckily, Dawson was able to use a source alive at the time to learn about gay culture in the 1950s. He told Variety, “I have a man who’s very special to me who I worked with years ago, and became close friends with him. He used to tell me a lot of beautiful stories of him growing up as a gay man during this period.”

He also watched a docudrama titled Against the Law to prepare and understand the implications of being gay in the 1950s.
