Tony Bennett Recounts How He Stopped His Drug Use Without Rehab

Tony Bennett is a music legend the world will never forget. Sadly, he died in July 2023 due to Alzheimer’s disease — and he had a history of cocaine and cannabis use that he opened up about years prior to his death. Here’s what Tony Bennett said about stopping his drug use before he had to step into a rehabilitation center.

Tony Bennett explained how he stopped his drug use without rehab

The legendary Tony Bennett was no stranger to drug use. And through the years, he opened up about his addiction to cocaine. When he and his family moved to Hollywood in the 1970s, his drug abuse went from zero to 60.

“On top of everything else, the ’70s drug scene was getting out of control,” he wrote in his 1998 memoir, The Good Life, according to Today. “At every big party I’d go to, people were high on something. Cocaine flowed as freely as champagne, and I soon began joining in the festivities. At first, it seemed like the hip thing to do, but as time went on it got harder and harder to refuse it when it was offered. Compounded with my pot-smoking, the whole thing started to sneak up on me.”

More recently, he reflected on his drug use again during a 2016 interview with the San Diego Tribune. “When I was younger, I was foolish,” Bennett said. “I did a lot of drugs and all that. And then I learned, from experience, that I wasn’t doing the right thing, and I stopped (taking) all kinds of stimulants that are very bad for you. It was the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Thankfully, Bennett was able to kick his drug use without outside intervention. And it was the words of the manager of comedian Lenny Bruce that changed everything for the musician.

“The manager of (comedian) Lenny Bruce told me he sinned against his talent with his drug habit,” Bennett explained, according to the Daily Mail. “That sentence changed my life. I’ve been given this gift. I know how to sing and perform. I’m sinning against this gift and I thought, ‘I am not going to do that anymore,’ and I just stopped. I had to, because I thought I was going to lose everything. It was said at the right moment, at the right time.”

His ex-wife, Sandra Grant, saved him from drowning in the bathroom

At the height of Tony Bennett’s drug use, his wife at the time, Sandra Grant, saved his life. Bennett overdosed on cocaine in 1979 and nearly drowned in the bathtub.

“I tried to calm myself down by taking a hot bath, but I must’ve passed out,” he wrote in his 2016 memoir, Just Getting Started. “And I experienced what some call a near-death experience; a golden life enveloped me in a warm glow. It was quite peaceful. … But suddenly, I was jolted out of the vision.”

“The tub was overflowing and Sandra was standing above me,” he continued. “She’d heard the water running too long, and when she came in, I wasn’t breathing. She pounded on my chest and literally brought me back to life.”

Grant rushed Bennett to the hospital — and he remembered the words of Lenny Bruce’s manager. “I realized that I’m sinning against the gift that was given to me by nature. … It really stopped me cold,” Bennett continued. “I did not withdraw. I had no recovery period. The minute I stopped it, I felt relieved. I felt normal. I didn’t have to hide to smoke or do other naughty things. All of a sudden, I was just honest.”

Some stars lean into this by serving as spokespeople or even launching companies of their own. Christina Aguilera recently kicked off such a venture of her own with sexual wellness bland Playground, and in the process, the singer shared some personal details about her own life.

Aguilera, of course, rose to fame in the late 1990s. Her first big single was “Reflection” from the Disney animated film Mulan in 1998. The following year, she released her self-titled debut album featuring such hits as “Genie in a Bottle,” “What a Girl Wants,” and “Come On Over (All I Want Is You).” That success continued with chart-topping albums such as 2002’s Stripped and 2006’s Back to Basics, both of which earned her Grammys for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

More recently, Aguilera landed top ten hits with the Pitbull collaboration “Feel This Moment” and the Grammy-winning “Say Something” with A Great Big World. She’s also become known as a television personality, including her time as a coach on The Voice and recent appearances on RuPaul’s Drag Race and Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil.

Now Aguilera is turning her attention to sexual wellness as the co-founder and chief brand advisor of the lube brand Playground. She recently told People about her goals for the company as well as her own personal experience.

“This is a very natural progression for me personally. [I hope to] inspire other women to feel comfortable with talking about their experiences and owning their body and their sexuality and what that means to them because every woman is different. I’ve gotten to know my vagina well over the last 42 years. And literally there are pleasure points that keep opening up as you get older. And that’s something that I’ve really noticed. There’s four different places that I can orgasm from around my vagina, and that is the truth.”

Aguilera continued to discuss Playground’s product line, emphasizing its potential role in helping women take ownership over their sexuality. “Even if you don’t have a partner, you can have your own date night with yourself. … Get to know yourself early so that you can lead a more pleasurable life.”

Aguilera is, of course, far from the first celebrity to take on a business venture outside of the entertainment industry. She’s not even remotely close to the only star to launch a brand tied to intimacy and sexual wellness. After all, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop has plenty of those items for sale.

But by the sounds of it, Aguilera has a personal motivation for her role in Playground. The singer has always been adamant about owning her sexuality and identity, as fans remember particularly from her Stripped era. Now she hopes to help other women do the same.

The third film, Pitch Perfect 3, was released in 2017. Over the five-year period, Wilson maintained her role of Fat Amy in all three films.

Since the franchise’s end, Wilson shared how portraying Fat Amy interfered with her desire to live a healthier lifestyle. On the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper, Wilson discussed how her Pitch Perfect contract hurt her. According to Wilson, it stated she could not gain or lose more than 10 pounds while under contract with the franchise.

Despite not being able to make significant changes to her physical appearance, the Bridesmaids star desperately wanted to start living a healthier lifestyle. According to Eating Well, Wilson got serious about her commitment to living a healthier life in 2020. Wilson publicly proclaimed that 2020 would be her “year of health,” and the entertainer wasn’t joking. From 2020 to 2022, Wilson dropped 77 pounds by changing her eating habits and focusing on moving her body more.

After consulting with a fertility doctor in 2019 about harvesting and freezing her eggs, Wilson was told the process would have a much higher rate of being successful if she was able to maintain a healthier weight first.

Of course, this was not what the Cats actor had wanted to hear when she walked into the facility. She told People, “I was taken aback. I thought, ‘Oh God, this guy’s so rude.’ He was right. I was carrying around a lot of excess weight. It’s almost like I didn’t think of my own needs. I thought of a future child’s needs, that really inspired me to get healthier.”

The hard work and lifestyle changes that Wilson made definitely paid off. Not only was she able to drop nearly 80 pounds, but the entertainer was also able to successfully harvest her eggs. In November 2022, Wilson and her girlfriend, Ramona Agruma, welcomed a little girl into the world via a surrogate. According to People, the 43-year-old gave her daughter the name Royce Lillian Elizabeth Wilson.

Lopez says her daily self-care routine includes getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and meditating.

“Those always work,” says Lopez. “They’re the fundamentals of any sport or anything that you do.”

Lopez takes stock of her habits whenever she isn’t feeling her best. She realizes that if she doesn’t feel well, it’s likely because she isn’t taking care of herself the way she should.

“I always feel like, OK, if I’m feeling too tired, what am I neglecting?” says Lopez. “Am I neglecting my sleep? Am I not working out consistently? Have I let that go? Do I need to get back on that? Am I not drinking enough water? Why do I feel this way? If something’s off, just check the basics, and for me that that always works.”

“My favorite form of self-care is taking a bath!” says Lopez. “To be honest, it’s the most luxurious thing I do. It’s a ritual for me. I use all kinds of bath salts, bath milks, and aromatherapy oils. And I love throwing all different color rose petals, dried lavender, and rosemary in there too! Soaking keeps my skin hydrated and silky and calms me down from all the day’s stimulation. I try not to be on my phone either—just pure relaxation time.”

When I said that I was at 400 pounds.”

“I just checked today and I’m at 362 and I want to lose about 15 more pounds,” he added. “And then I’m gonna start getting really muscular and sexy. And it’s just all about eating right. O’Neal said he is feeling better than ever and described what is inside those shakes. “In the morning, I’ll have strawberry, blueberry, and anti-oxidants,” he said. “Then I’ll go work out. Today I had tuna on wheat crackers.”

Always someone who is ready to laugh and crack a smile, O’Neal talked about the hilarious new “The Break” campaign commercial spots he shot for the insurance company The General.

“The Break” campaign shows how The General puts itself into its customers’ shoes and gives drivers a break when they need one the most.

O’Neal is featured with infamous meme man, “Bad Luck Brian,” (Kyle Craven) who rose to fame in 2012 that featured a high school photo and bad luck narrative.

O’Neal has been a brand spokesperson for The General for years and he shared why. The humorous commercial spots were a collaborative effort and O’Neal said, “The General gave me my first break when I was in college. So I take pride in getting with brands that have similar values. I got to work with a kid named ‘Bad Luck Brian’ and it was actually very, very funny. I saw a couple of his memes and he was actually pretty funny. But, this campaign is all about giving people a break when I need it the most.”

The ad campaign is launching three installments that will roll out on TV, digital and social media platforms.

Bateman shared how she first discovered people thought she looked “old.” The actor says she was doing a Google search when she made the discovery.

“When I was writing my first book, Fame, I made the mistake of Googling myself, which I don’t suggest for anybody,” Bateman tells Time. The autocomplete was, ‘looks old.’ So [the search results said] ‘Justine Bateman looks old.’ At the time, I was 41 or 42, and I thought, ‘Really? I didn’t think I looked old.’”

Bateman says she initially thought everyone was right about the way she looked. However, she changed her mind and began to accept her appearance. When she wrote her follow-up book, Face, she says her goal was to learn how not to react to other people’s opinions of her appearance.

Why Justine Bateman doesn’t want plastic surgery

Bateman tells 60 Minutes Australia she could have procedures to smooth out her wrinkles, but she prefers not to. She doesn’t want to “erase” the last couple of years of her life.

“You can do all of that [surgery],” says Bateman. “But I feel like I would erase not only all of my authority that I have now, but also, I like feeling that I am a different person now than I was when I was 20. I like looking in the mirror and seeing that evidence.”

Justine Bateman wants people to ‘forget about’ their faces

Bateman says she wants people to stop paying so much attention to how they look. She doesn’t believe having wrinkles will stop people from reaching their dreams.

“I’m saying, forget about your face,” says Bateman during her interview with 60 Minutes Australia. “Get at the fear that is making you think that the fact that your face is wrinkled is going to [cancel] out a bunch of opportunities for you.”

Bateman says our views on aging have more to do with our fears. “The problem is not the face; the problems are these fears,” says Bateman during her interview with Time. “If you change the face, you’re still going to have these fears.”

At one point in the interview, Bateman is asked if there is “beauty in aging.” She responds by saying she doesn’t really care what others think.

“When you say, ‘Is there beauty in aging?’ aren’t you really saying, ‘Do you think it’s possible for other people to find aging beautiful?’ I just don’t give a s***. I think I look rad. I think my face represents who I am. I like it, and so that’s basically the end of the road.”

Gilbert says appearing on Dancing With the Stars once caused her to become focused on looking perfect. She became self-conscious about her body. She tells People she felt pressure to appear flawless.

“The pressure that I put on myself was to stay as young as I could for as long as I could and remain an ingénue as long as I could, which is impossible,” she tells the publication. Gilbert says she became more concerned about how she looked while appearing on Dancing With the Stars. She says the show “was the peak of Botox, fillers, spray tan, hair extensions, big boobs. That was the epitome of all the stuff I’m the opposite of at this point.”

Gilbert decided after starring on the reality show that she wanted to change her approach to beauty. Her goal is to not only look good but also feel good. Gilbert wants older women to feel confident and beautiful. She started her website, Modern Prairie, in May 2022. Her goal is to provide a positive space for older women.

“There’s this space for women my age that just doesn’t exist or is so discounted,” Gilbert tells Better Homes & Gardens. “We’re going through such changes in our lives, not just physically but emotionally and mentally. Our kids are leaving, and we’re moving from mom into grandmother. We’re reevaluating our jobs and what we want to do with this last third of our lives and dealing with our bodies growing older.”

Gilbert continues, “How do we navigate all of this in the current climate? So I wanted to include products that are beautiful, that enhance our lives, and that we want to surround ourselves with.”

Melissa Gilbert doesn’t like the word ‘anti-aging’

Gilbert says she stays away from the word “anti-aging.” The Modern Prairie website is a positive place where getting older is seen as a natural part of life instead of something to fear.

“We are absolutely against the word anti-aging—because it doesn’t happen,” Gilbert tells Better Homes & Gardens. “We are all aging. The question is how you’re going to age. Are you going to fight, fight, fight, or are you going to embrace all of the changes that are coming in?”

Gilbert adds, “We like to say instead, aging gracefully, aging gratefully. I’m so grateful. I’m so grateful that I know what my body needs. And yeah, it’s not as bendy and bouncy as it used to be, but it’s still mine and it’s serving me beautifully. So, I’m grateful.”

Specifically, people have speculated that Brady may have had buccal fat removal. The procedure removes excess fat from the cheeks, creating a more defined jawline. An expert, Dr. Gary Linkov, recently weighed in on the retired NFL player‘s face.

Brady has been in the public eye for over two decades. During that time, his appearance has changed in subtle ways. However, one thing that has remained consistent is his signature forehead wrinkles, which were visible in photos up until 2017.

In 2018, the NFL star appeared on the cover of Madden NFL 18. Many fans noticed his forehead was completely smooth. While this could be a result of Botox injections, it could also just be the result of clever makeup or lighting.

Another change people have noticed recently, especially after a UFC match, is that Brady’s face looks gaunter than it used to. This could be due to weight loss or aging. But some fans speculate that he had buccal fat removal. As detailed by Healthline, buccal fat is a deep layer of fat in the cheek. When it is removed, it can create a more defined, chiseled appearance.

Dr. Gary Linkov weighs in on Tom Brady’s face

Dr. Gary Linkov, a plastic surgeon based in New York City, studied Brady’s face over the years and gave some interesting insights into how it has changed. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Dr. Linkov disputed the claims that Brady had buccal fat removal.

He explained the NFL star allegedly went through a loss of lateral and middle cheek fat, which is just a part of the aging process. Unlike lateral and middle cheek fat, buccal fat is very deep. When removed, it produces a different look than what’s seen on Brady.

Dr. Linkov also mentioned Brady’s hair, noting that the hairline looked natural and that he couldn’t tell that Brady had gotten a transplant. However, he did point out that the famous player likely underwent Botox in 2022 to make his face look smoother.

Brady has never publicly admitted to getting cosmetic surgery. He has previously stated that his looks are thanks to good genes, a vegan diet, and drinking lots of water.

Tom Brady’s ex-wife is no stranger to plastic surgery

The NFL star has also been through a lot in recent months, which could explain his weight loss and gaunt appearance. On October 28, 2022, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback got divorced from his wife, Gisele Bundchen, after 13 years of marriage.

Bundchen is no stranger to plastic surgery herself. In her memoir, Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life, the Brazilian supermodel revealed she had a breast augmentation early in her career. However, she later came to regret the decision and had the implants removed in 2015.

She said: “Everything in life teaches us something, and, in this situation, I learned that it’s not worth doing something because I feel pressured and want to please others. I regretted it, and I don’t know if I would do plastic surgery again. I have no such need.”

Gisele has not commented on whether she believes that Brady has had plastic surgery or not. Unfortunately, fans will likely continue to debate whether the retired NFL player has had work done on his face.

Delevingne’s family staged an intervention, with the Daily Mail reporting that they were searching for ways to help. The British supermodel was seen sitting in a car alone, smoking what appeared to be a pipe, and it was the last straw for those who love her.

At the time, a close friend said “We are all incredibly concerned. The situation has been building for a few weeks now, and Cara’s family is involved.” Naturally, her family wanted her to get the help she needed. The same person added that Delevingne “has been burning the candle at both ends of late, and it’s clearly taking its toll.”

The model was born into a prominent family. Speaking to Vogue, she recently opened up a bit about her childhood. “In a way, a lot of people have looked at my childhood or my family and thought, She’s spoiled, there’s nepotism, she grew up extremely privileged, which I did, don’t get me wrong. But life wasn’t all that easy for other reasons,” Delevingne began.

She reveals she began drinking and partying when she was a teenager, adding that was when everything came “plummeting.” But years before, at a family wedding, Delevingne first abused alcohol. “I woke up in my granny’s house in my bedroom with a hangover, in a bridesmaid’s dress. I’d gone around nailing glasses of champagne,” she revealed.

Recalling her earlier years, Delevingne spoke about how she began to depend on substances. “There’s an element of feeling invincible when I’m on drugs,” she shared. “I put myself in danger in those moments because I don’t care about my life.”

Just a few months ago that Delevingne was attracting attention for the wrong reasons, so how is she doing now? Following the interview, she seems much better, recently turning heads at the Oscars where she looked much healthier and happier. She is proud to be four months sober after a stint in rehab, and really is working on her well-being after the “wake-up call” she had a few months ago.

“Before I was always into the quick fix of healing, going to a weeklong retreat or to a course for trauma, say, and that helped for a minute, but it didn’t ever really get to the nitty-gritty, the deeper stuff,” she told Vogue. “This time I realized that 12-step treatment was the best thing, and it was about not being ashamed of that. The opposite of addiction is connection, and I really found that in 12-step.”

Former Friends star Jennifer Aniston discussed her experience with insomnia. She says she had trouble sleeping for “decades.” Here’s what Aniston shared about her efforts to reclaim her nights and the importance of sleep.

Aniston values sleep, but she didn’t realize how important it was when she was younger. Today, she is aware of how much sleep contributes to one’s overall well-being.

“Sleep is extraordinary. It’s beautiful,” Aniston tells InStyle. “But, boy, did I take it for granted when we were young. When you’re younger, you kind of take it for granted. You think, ‘I can survive on three to five hours of sleep and I feel great,’ and then, all of a sudden, it just starts not to feel great and your performance isn’t as up to par as it should be.”

Aniston reveals her sleep problems once became so severe that she began sleepwalking. At one point, she was setting off the house alarms.

“I’ve been woken up by house alarms going off that I’ve set off,” she tells People. “And I don’t think I do that anymore — that was when I was super sleep deprived. At least there’s that silver lining. The body is saying, ‘Now don’t go out and set the alarm off again, OK?’”

Aniston says her sleep troubles affected her work as well as her physical and mental health. She took steps to raise awareness of the importance of sleep through her partnership with pharmaceutical company Idorsia on the Seize the Night and Day campaign. Aniston says she learned how sleep affects the mind and body.

“All of your body is getting all the work done that it put itself through during the day,” Aniston tells In Style. “You realize a lack of sleep leads to all sorts of health issues. Unfortunately, lost sleep isn’t something you can get back. No matter how long you snooze on the weekends, you can’t make up sleep. It’s a deficit you won’t ever get back.”

Aniston knew it was time to get help when she noticed she was continuing to have trouble sleeping. She delayed getting help, but she knew she had to do something when the other parts of her life were affected.

“It became something that I really was struggling with,” she tells People. “It used to be the last thing on the list, but you can’t really abide by the three pillars of health — which are diet, exercise, and sleep — if you can’t really exercise and you can’t really eat right if you haven’t slept well because your body clock is so completely thrown off.”

The Friends actor tells the publication she sought medical help. She also committed to a regular sleep schedule. She’s now on the path toward a better quality of life.
