’Naked and Afraid’ Star Dan Link Defends Terra Short

Dan Link has the back of another Naked and Afraid star.

After Naked and Afraid XL cast member Terra Short was criticized for their behavior on a recent episode of the Discovery Channel reality series, Link came to their defense. Link pointed out that aspects of Terra’s experience as a transgender/nonbinary person likely informed their reaction to feeling excluded by some of the other cast.

Terra Short felt left out in a recent episode of ‘Naked and Afraid XL’

Terra’s tough moment came in the June 23 episode of Naked and Afraid XL. After Terra’s group joined forces with the other remaining survivalists, the women set about catching a caiman. When they finally got lucky early one morning, they celebrated loudly. Terra couldn’t help but feel left out.

“Being trans/nonbinary, I guess I’m just used to feeling like the outcast in my life,” Terra said in an interview. “And I feel like once again, that’s the direction this is taking on. So, I’m still pretty bummed. We’ll see what happens.”

Terra had trouble hiding their feelings about the incident. That led Lynsey McCarver to pull her fellow survivalist aside for a heart-to-heart chat.

“I felt alone. I felt excluded. I felt like no one gave a f*ck that I was still here,” Terra explained. Hearing the female cast members “hootin and hollerin” about the caiman catch was “the icing on the cake” in terms of feeling left out, they added.

“I don’t want you to feel that way,” Lynsey said.

The two then hugged it out, which left Terra feeling better and realizing she might need to adjust how she responded to certain situations.

“Lynsey and I are still a good happy family … I’m not here to be a selfish human. I think that I’m gonna do better,” Terra said.

Dan Link says Terra’s feelings about being ‘the odd person out’ resonated with him

Some Naked and Afraid viewers were critical of Terra’s emotional reaction to the caiman incident. That prompted Link, who has appeared on Naked and Afraid and well the spinoffs XL, and Last One Standing, to come to Terra’s defense.

“I get the comments and agree it could have been better,” Link wrote in a Facebook post. “That said, I also understand Terras background in life and where they’re coming from which is important to consider. They articulated their feelings perfectly as well and came to a quick resolution which says a lot.”

“When Terra spoke about being trans/non-binary and feeling like the odd person out throughout their life, that resonated. I’ve seen that happen plenty with others in similar situations … Even though I don’t think being trans had anything to do with this particular situation, when you live the life they have it can be difficult to parse out social situations sometimes which can cause issues in your relationships that you have to work through,” he added.

Link went on to say that understanding where Terra was coming from, it made it easier to understand their reaction and give them “some grace … especially considering, again, that they own up to it all and work through it immediately.”

Terra appreciated the support from a Naked and Afraid legend.

“I love you,” they wrote in response to Link’s post.

Terra Short says ‘Naked and Afraid XL’ was their ‘most difficult challenge’

In the Naked and Afraid XL season finale, which aired June 30, Terra reflected on how special it was to reach the finish line with their seven remaining teammates.

“I’ve been through some really difficult stuff in my life. I’ve been through some really painful stuff in my life. And usually alone,” they said. “But 40 days out here, this is the most difficult challenge I’ve ever had to do.”

“But when you find people that are your tribe and you can feel that love from strangers that you’ve only known for the last 40 days now, that can help you, help me, to survive out here,” Terra added. “I feel like I’ve learned that no matter how bad it gets, it’s better if you keep your morale high and get through the challenge together as a tribe.”

Will There Be Another Season of ‘Naked and Afraid XL’?

Enjoy it while it lasts. Season 10 of Naked and Afraid XL is currently airing on Discovery Channel. But it might be a while before season 11 makes it to TV. The network has hit pause on production of fresh episodes of the survival reality show, according to a recent report.

‘Naked and Afraid XL’ is getting a ‘creative refresh’

Naked and Afraid XL, which premiered in 2015, was the first of several Naked and Afraid spinoffs. It brings together participants who’ve participated in the original show’s 21-day challenge for a super-sized group challenge in locations such as South Africa, Montana, and the Amazon. But after nearly a decade on the air, it’s time to give the stale format an overhaul, according to a recent Deadline report.

“We have paused production on the next season of Naked and Afraid XL for a creative refresh with plans to shoot later this year,” a Discovery spokeswoman said.

The success of another Naked and Afraid spinoff, Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing, has apparently allowed producers the time to rethink XL. That show will return for a second season on July 14, and production on a third season is believed to have been moved up, Deadline reported.

Naked and Afraid XL’s currently airing 10th season follows 12 people on a grueling, 40-day survival experience in Colombia. The season finale will air on June 30. Meanwhile, production on the next season of Naked and Afraid is underway through August.

Last One Standing features a group of the show’s toughest survivalists competing for a $100,000 prize. (Other Naked and Afraid shows do not reward a cash prize for completing the challenge.) In season 2, a group of 14 Naked and Afraid alums – including season 1 participants Jeff Zausch, Dan Link, and Gary Golding – will embark on a head-to-head challenge in Africa’s Munzwa Valley. And unlike in season 1, there will be no teaming up. Sharing tools with other contestants won’t be allowed, making this contest truly every person for themselves.

In addition to XL and Last One Standing, Naked and Afraid has spawned several other spinoffs, including Naked and Afraid: Solo, Naked and Afraid of Love, and Naked and Afraid: Castaways.

Naked and Afraid XL Season 10 airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Channel. Episodes also stream on Max.

‘Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing’ Season 2 Will Feature Some Big Rule Changes

Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing Season 2 is coming to Discovery Channel. But the competition will look a little different this time around. Rule changes mean that the contest will really be every survivalist for themselves, cast member Jeff Zausch has teased.

Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing brings together some of the most experienced participants from past seasons of Naked and Afraid. In season 1, they had to complete a 45-day challenge in South Africa. The three-phase contest involved both solo and group challenges in the Oribi Gorge. The winner of the contest went home with bragging rights and $100,000.

In season 2, which premieres on July 14, things will look a little different, Zausch teased in an June 14 Instagram Story.

“Last One Standing Season 1, it was a good try,” he said. “It was a good try. But people thought it was a group project. They teamed up. They shared resources. And weak links ended up making it to the end. And even ended up winning the thing. Let’s be real.” (Waz Addy was the season 1 winner.)

“Now, there’s new rules in place,” Zausch explained. “Like, people can no longer share tools and share items between people. So everybody is literally on their own.”

The season will kick off with a surprise, head-to-head challenge on day one. That leads to a shocking double elimination before the survivalists even get to camp.

“It’s every man and woman for themselves,” Zausch added. “I absolutely believe the winner of this season will be the greatest survivalist in this entire 10-year Naked and Afraid project.”

With new rules and new competitors, Zausch is confident that the new season of Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing will be one not to miss. As a contestant, he promises to match his season 1 energy, and then some.

“You guys haven’t seen anything yet,” he declared of the new season, which will also feature Dan Link. Bulent Gurcan, and Patrick French, among other Naked and Afraid alums.

In season 1, Jeff alienated some of the other cast members with his aggressive style of play early on, then complained later when he felt a clique of “mean girl” cast members had turned against him. There won’t be any such cattiness in season 2, he says.

“There’s no room for freaking mean girls,” he said. “Everyone has to bring it. The weak links will be eliminated. And only the true winner will advance to the end.”

“This is what I live for … This is what Naked and Afraid was always meant to be,” he said. “It was meant to be a freaking competition with one winner, with one victor. An opportunity for us to prove who is the greatest in the world.”

Jeff Zausch Confirms ‘Revenge Tour’ in ‘Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing’ Season 2

Jeff Zausch is ready for his comeback tour. After a disappointing finish in the first season of Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing, he’s giving the competition another shot in season 2. And this time, he doesn’t intend to go home a loser.

Zausch broke the news that he’d be part of the Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing Season 2 cast in a July 14 Instagram post.

“Revenge tour starts in 3…2…1,” he wrote.

“We all saw how season one turned out…this time there’s no room for mean girls and EVERYONE must come to play!!” he added. “THIS IS WHAT I LIVE FOR RIGHT NOW!!!”

Zausch was a big – and divisive – presence in the first season of the Naked and Afraid spinoff. He came into the competition determined to win, and he didn’t care who he stepped on to do it. But after clashing with many of the other competitors due to his aggressive style of gameplay, the Idaho survivalist failed to advance to the show’s final round. Waz Addy ultimately won the $100,000 grand prize.

In interviews and social media posts, Zausch didn’t hesitate to criticize what he saw as some major flaws in Last One Standing. He accused the other cast members of playing for a “participation trophy” and of unfairly ganging up on him.

In a 2023 chat with Jonny Fairplay on the Reality After Show podcast, Zausch vowed to hold nothing back if he was invited to return for season 2.

“If there’s a season 2, I’m going all in … Season 2, when it comes around, you are going to see scorched earth,” Zausch said. “Like, no one is going to have a shelter because they’re all going to be on fire. I’m done. They’ve mistreated me and now I’m pissed. I guarantee you, season 2, the best man will win. That is my commitment to the viewers.”

‘Naked and Afraid XL’ Cast Member Promises to ‘Bite Back’ in Season Premiere Clip

Twelve of Naked and Afraid’s toughest survivalists are taking on a new challenge in the upcoming season of Naked and Afraid XL. They’ll head to the brutal Colombian badlands, where they’ll fight to survive for 40 days without food, water, or clothes.

In a clip from the May 12 season premiere, one of the survivalists makes it clear she has every intention of completing the challenge, no matter what obstacles she faces.

In her previous Naked and Afraid appearance in 2021, Lynsey McCarver spent 2021 in the Lapala wilderness of South Africa. She’s ready for whatever the South American jungle throws at her.

“The Colombian badlands has everything that wants to bite you and eat you,” she says in the premiere episode (via YouTube). “But I will bite back.”

The vet tech from Idaho also plans to lean on her considerable skills as an outdoorswoman in her latest adventure.

“I can find food anywhere I go. I definitely want to hunt,” she says. “I’m not going to be, like, Susie Homemaker and stay at home boiling water and collecting firewood.”

This ‘Naked and Afraid XL’ will be ‘a true test’ of survival skills, says Sam Mouzer

Among the survivalists joining Lynsey in Colombia is Sam Mouzer. He lasted three weeks in a remote part of New Mexico in a 2023 episode of Naked and Afraid. But he knows this latest challenge is not for the faint of heart.

“This is going to be a true test of all the survivalists out here,” he says in another clip (via YouTube). “I don’t care who they are.”

Still, Sam is confident in his own abilities.

“But as a survivalist, I can be quite adaptive,” he says. “Dare I say, a good all-arounder.”

For Sam, who hails from the U.K., teamwork is key to success in survival situations. (His fellow cast members include Andrew Shayde from Naked and Afraid: Castaways and Terra Short from Naked and Afraid: Solo.) But he worries he might not realize what he’s getting into.

“I find I’m at my strongest when I’m helping others … but compared to where I’m from, this place might as well be a total alien planet for me,” he admits.

Sam might be right to be concerned. This time around, Naked and Afraid XL is upping the ante by adding an extra twist to the challenge. In addition to facing down a harsh environment filled with blood-sucking mosquitoes, vicious biting ants, and stalking jaguars, the cast will also have to trek 40 miles across six unique terrains if they want to successfully complete the challenge. Naked and Afraid XL returns in May with an all-new season, with 12 people – including some notable Naked and Afraid alums – attempting to survive 40 days in the wild. And this season, there’s a new twist that will make completing their challenge that much more difficult.

This season, a dozen past Naked and Afraid participants will be challenged to complete 40 days in the Colombian badlands without food, water, or clothes. And they won’t just have to endure blood-sucking mosquitos, ants, ticks, disease-causing parasites, jaguars, and caimans. During this Naked and Afraid challenge, they’ll have to trek 40 miles across six unique terrains. Along the way, they’ll face triple-digit temperatures, violent electrical storms, and a deluge of rain as they fight to join the rank of legendary Naked and Afraid cast members.

“This is insane,” one cast member says in the teaser for the new season.

Kaiela described the current group of Naked and Afraid XL participants as “the most incredibly brave, bad-ass humans.”

“Sh*ts about to get wierddddddd yall,” she wrote on Instagram. “Tune in Sunday May 12th (Mother’s Day) to see the first episode of the wildest ride of our lives.”

This Naked and Afraid survivalist might not be tough enough to survive the jungle. In the April 7 episode of the Discovery Channel reality series, a contestant is struggling with severe hunger. But when he stumbles upon a valuable source of food, he hesitates to kill it, putting his and his partner’s chances of completing their 21-day challenge in jeopardy.

A ‘Naked and Afraid’ survivalist makes a surprising choice

When it comes to finding success on Naked and Afraid, finding food is key. While it’s possible to survive for lengthy periods of time without eating, not getting enough – or in some cases, any – calories will wear participants down and make it difficult to complete other survival tasks.

So, when Keenan Williams happens to encounter a tortoise in a sneak peek from the upcoming episode of Naked and Afraid, it’s a huge stroke of good luck. But he doesn’t see it that way.

“Oh my God, that is so beautiful,” he cries when he sees the animal, which he quickly picks up. “Look at that thing … that is so amazing.”

However, even though Keenan has the animal in hand, he decides that it’s not going to be dinner for him and his partner Fairland Ferguson.

“No eating tortoises,” he declares.

“Seriously?” she replies.

Survivalist fears the tortoise will ‘haunt’ him if he kills it

In an interview, Keenan explains that going into his Naked and Afraid experience, he had no doubts about his ability to hunt for food. But now that he’s actually in the wild, he’s having second thoughts.

“This tortoise like really jolted me for some reason,” he says. “I mean, I’m going on four days and not eating. And I can’t kill it. I’m having a lot of doubts about, just, what I’m going to eat and what I’m OK with eating.”

“Going in here, I was like, there’s no way I can’t find turtles and all these snakes and stuff. I’ll find those so easy that I’m going to be full. I’m going to eat so much. Like, all these things that I go out and find, that is food. People eat those,” he adds. “But now, I don’t know. These are my things, these reptiles. And I’m almost scared that if I kill something that it will, you, know, haunt me.”

‘Naked and Afraid’: Armchair Survivalists Test Their Skills in the March 31 Episode [Sneak Peek]

Do these Naked and Afraid fans have what it takes to survive in the harsh Colombian jungle? They thought they did. But in a clip from the March 31 episode of the Discovery Channel reality series, the two newbie survivalists realize they may have underestimated how tough it really is to complete the show’s famous 21-day survival challenge.

‘Naked and Afraid’ survivalists deal with nasty bug attacks

Maria Lucy ‘MaLu’ Beyoncé and Kyle Malo team up in the next episode of Naked and Afraid. Both are fans of the show – Beyoncé even hosts a podcast dedicated to dissecting the series. But once they’re dropped in the jungle, it quickly becomes clear that there’s a big difference between watching the show on TV and actually living it.

On their first night, the pair struggle to sleep due to an army of creepy crawlies that won’t stop biting.

“Jesus, these bugs are no joke,” Malo says. “It’s really difficult to sleep when you have about 4,000 bugs eating you alive.”

“This is so uncomfortable,” Beyoncé says. “Oh my God, they’re in my privates too.”

The bug attacks shouldn’t have come as a surprise, Beyoncé admits.

“I think we expected this because we critique [the show] so much,” she says.

“It’s one thing to critique it,” Malo replies. “But when you’re the one sitting in the middle of the Colombian jungle getting eaten alive by God knows what, it’s a little different.”

Somehow, Beyoncé and Malo make it to morning.

“That was the worst night of my life,” he says. “It didn’t end either. The sun took so long to come up.”

“I felt like we were in a sleep deprivation chamber,” she says. “I was like, ‘Let me out.’”

‘Naked and Afraid’ cast member makes shoes out of duct tape

In another clip from the episode, Beyoncé makes use of the one survival tool she was allowed to bring with her into the wild. With Malo’s help, she fashions shoes out of duct tape.

As they work on crafting their makeshift footwear, Beyoncé and Malo discuss how much they like the recent Naked and Afraid spinoff Last One Standing. Though they might not have as much survival experience as some of the show’s contestants, their easy rapport should serve them well on their journey, Beyoncé thinks.

“I like Kyle. He’s great,” she says in an interview. “He’s super funny and he kind of gets my sense of humor. And that’s really going to be helpful. Together, I think we’re going to prove that armchair survivalists are actually survivalists.”

Two Naked and Afraid veterans embrace the tough task of mentoring two new survivalists in the March 3 episode of the Discovery Channel reality series. But limited food and torrential tropical storms take a toll on this all-female tribe during their 21-day challenge in San José Del Guaviare, Colombia.

Ky Furneaux and Gabby Balassone are ‘Naked and Afraid’ all-stars

Ky Furneaux and Gabby Balassone are both elite Naked and Afraid alums.

Furneaux, who is originally from Australia, is a former Hollywood stunt double. Ten years ago, her first Naked and Afraid challenge took her to the muggy swamps of Louisiana. She returned to the show to swim naked with sharks in the Bahamas and take on a solo challenge in the Amazon. She also competed on Naked and Afraid XL: Frozen. Furneaux is an expert in mountaineering, trapping, and bushcraft and enters this challenge with an impressive PSR of 9.1.

Balassone’s past Naked and Afraid appearances include an XL challenge in the Philippines and a fan challenge in South Africa. In season 9, she headed to Mississippi for a 21-day challenge, and she also participated in Naked and Afraid XL: Frozen in Montana. She has a PSR of 9.1.

“I love coming out on these challenges and I’m excited to be back for another one, to be honest,” she says in the sneak peek from the upcoming episode.

Furneaux and Balassone are no strangers to primitive survival. The same can’t be said to the women they’re mentoring: Elise Featherstone from Calgary and Megan Krugger from East Bridgewater, Mass.

In another clip from the March 3 episode, the Naked and Afraid vets are thrilled when a giant armadillo gets snagged by one of their traps. When the armadillo tries to make an escape, Balassone manages to grab it by its tail. She holds on while Furneaux swiftly dispatches the animal with a machete. It’s a brutal but necessary task if the women want to eat. Still, Featherstone, who is vegetarian, looks a little hesitant as she watches her partners slaughter their dinner.

“I’m so sorry, Elise,” Balassone says.

“I’m sorry you had to see that,” Furneaux echoes. Nonetheless, she can’t contain her excitement over the kill.

“We are eating tonight!” she says.

‘Naked and Afraid’ Survivalist Opens Up About Getting Her Period in the Wild [Sneak Peek]

One Naked and Afraid cast member is dealing with an extra complication on an upcoming episode of the Discovery Channel reality series.

Australian survivalist Britt Laidlaw is just a few days into her 21-day challenge in South Africa when she starts menstruating. But she’s not going to let getting her period sideline her, she explains in a sneak peek from the Feb. 25 episode.

‘Naked and Afraid’ survivalist is ‘free bleeding on South Africa’

In the clip, Laidlaw explains that although the arrival of her period has her feeling fatigued, she’s decided to embrace it as a memorable part of her Naked and Afraid experience.

“I feel so incredibly proud with how I’m listening to my body with the need to rest and lay down,” she explains. “I think a lot of people in a survival context would think that having a menstrual cycle out in the wild when you’ve got other sh*t to do would actually be a huge disadvantage, but I’m not out here to combat this place. I’m out here to connect with this place.”

“I also feel like me coming into my menstruation, that ceremony is to give blood in order to receive life from the land,” she adds.

While past Naked and Afraid participants have said that production provides menstrual supplies to those who need them, Laidlaw is going without those items.

“I’m basically having a period without any products like tampons or pads,” she shares. “I know I’m going to tell this story for the rest of my life of free bleeding on South Africa, the motherland,” she said. “I’m taking it as a real blessing.”

Britt’s partner struggles to pick up the slack in the next ‘Naked and Afraid’

While Britt listens to her body’s cues, Sara Kunz, her partner on the international tribes challenge, is left to pick up the slack.

“I have one thing on my mind and that’s food,” Sara, who is from Hawaii, says in another clip from the episode. “I recognize the struggle Britt has between getting things done and allowing her body to rest, but I think as a team, we need to take food more seriously.”

When a “physically really weak” Britt heads down to the water to refresh herself, she startles an antelope that her partner has been tracking. Sara struggles to contain her frustration.

“I hear my partner. There just can’t be anything here when it’s hunting time. There’s just no way it’s gonna work,” Sara says just before the animal darts off. “Yup. There, I just saw him f*cking run away.”
