‘Sister Wives’: Kody Brown’s Nothing But an Attention Seeker, His Ick Factor Revealed
Kody Brown has always been at the center of TLC’s Sister Wives. Although he maintained his wives and their children were the focus of their family, historically, Kody was its center. The women adhered to his wants and needs and catered to Kody, the ultimate attention seeker. Without question, his ick factor derives from this personality trait.
Was Kody Brown always an attention seeker?
In the book Becoming Sister Wives, the Brown family celebrated the story of their family and faith. Each adult chronicled their polygamy journey, how they met married, and their future goals.
Meri, Janelle, and Christine Brown, Kody’s three original wives, all agreed he was charismatic, funny and paid them a lot of attention. Kody’s charisma was one of the key attractions for all three women during their relationship. But it would turn into his most significant ick factor.
However, as the series progressed through 18 seasons, Kody’s attempts at being an attention seeker became more apparent. He wanted to be the center of each woman’s world, and he expected loyalty and obedience from all his children.
If a woman didn’t give Kody the attention he craved, she was discarded in favor of a different wife. This personality trait was visible repeatedly as he leaned more into his marriage to Robyn Brown.
She earned favor with Kody by making him the center of her world. This caused the ick factor that fans now know.
Kody Brown showed how inequitable he was
As Sister Wives progressed, the series turned more and more into the Kody Brown show. Each incident and family moment was centered around Kody’s moods, wants, and needs.
However, after Robyn Brown began demanding more of Kody’s time, Meri, Janelle, and Christine Brown realized he could be more of a husband than he previously demonstrated. While the OG3 had to raise their children with little to no involvement from Kody, he always seemed to be there for Robyn’s three children from a previous marriage and their two children together, Solomon and Ariella.
But Kody wanted to continue treating his first wives the same dismissive way he always did. He treated Robyn like a queen.
Then, Kody acted agitated when each woman created a life without him while he still stuck to the same old script. Kody was no longer the center of their worlds, and he subsequently lashed out at them.
Viewers react to Kody Brown’s ick factor
Kody Brown’s attention-seeking antics are synonymous with his ick factor. The Brown family patriarch has subsequently become one of the most disliked reality television personalities.
Viewers reacted to how Kody’s behavior has clouded their vision of him and been detrimental to his family. His relationships deteriorated as Kody demanded more attention and received less of it.
“Listen to Christine and Meri, who have never been exposed to monogamy, talk about how much better polygamy is than monogamy based on all their free time. Free time?! No help from the baby daddy, raising kids alone, living in poverty, running who knows how many scams just to get him to spend extra time with their children,” one Reddit user deduced.
Another wrote, “Kody tried to swoon us by looking like a fun and crazy kind of guy, but we are all way too smart. Yeah, be a court jester, but do your kids have enough to eat insurance, attention, and clothes? Are all those needs equal for all the children? He expected the audience to be all about slapstick and was hurt when we all called him out on his lack of responsible parenting. He was and still is a fool.”
A third fan deduced, “Over the years, it became increasingly uncomfortable watching the women stomp on each other and use the same misogynistic standards as the men of their culture on each other to win Kody’s attention. They expected the other wives to care, feed, educate, and financially provide for their kids instead of demanding Kody do it. I still don’t see that much growth from them.”
Sister Wives airs on TLC. The series is currently on hiatus.
