She said they did not have a fight, but an “emotional conversation” about their relationship did happen before he drove off. Amber Portwood reported Gary Wayt missing on June 11 in Bryson City, North Carolina. The couple was in town for a family wedding when Wayt left a cabin he was sharing with Portwood with his keys and wallet on June 9. A search was launched for the Indiana native. Days later, he was spotted in Oklahoma at a Verizon store. He was also reportedly seen in New Mexico. Wayt connected with the police and said he was fine.
It is still unclear why Gary Wayt decided to leave North Carolina and traverse the country. After connecting with Wayt, the Bryson City Police Department issued a statement that he was no longer considered a missing person. They did not offer additional details about his whereabouts. It is unclear if he has since returned to Indiana or where he is living. He was believed to have resided with Portwood at her Indiana home before his disappearance.
