How Sydney Sweeney got cast in ‘Euphoria’

While some Euphoria cast members went through multiple rounds of auditions, Sweeney’s experience was a one-and-done type deal. However, earning her spot in the cast wasn’t without its challenges. While Sweeney may seem like the perfect Cassie Howard now, Euphoria’s casting director didn’t initially feel that she was right for the role. Sweeney was told that she shouldn’t bother auditioning, but she wasn’t willing to take no for an answer. Since her agents at Paradigm had other clients going out for the role, Sweeney was able to get the audition sides. She put herself on tape performing the scene and sent it to the Euphoria team. It wasn’t long after that she was offered the coveted role in the cast.

But just what was the scene that Sweeney auditioned with that led her to booking her role in the show? While speaking with Emmys, the Fifty-Fifty Films founder revealed that it wasn’t one that fans of Euphoria would recognize. “It was actually not a scene that was in the show,” Sweeney shared when asked what scene she auditioned with. “A lot of times projects do that so that it doesn’t give away a character’s storyline or the show’s storyline. So they’ll either write a separate scene for the character or they’ll just pull from other projects and have you audition.”

Which ‘Euphoria’ scenes did Sweeney really enjoy filming?

While Cassie, might not always be having the best time, Sweeney admits she loves the wild rides that Cassie has taken her on thus far. “I thoroughly enjoyed every up and down that Cassie went through; all of her roller coasters and journeys,” Sweeney shared when asked about a standout scene from the sophomore season of Euphoria. “I’d like to say I’m proud of all of it.”

Of course, there was one scene, in particular, that Sweeney really had a blast filming. She enjoyed the fun she got to have in the hot tub scene when she was playing drunk. This is especially true since, in her real life, Sweeney drinks water almost exclusively. “I think I enjoyed it more than anything because I don’t drink,” she explained. “So it was kind of fun to get to play a side of myself that I would not be doing. I felt more free than anything, diving into sides of myself where I wouldn’t actually go.”

Instead, the cast and crew focused all their energy on making the best pilot they could in the hopes that HBO would order more episodes. To say that they were successful would be a gross understatement. To date, Euphoria has become one of HBO’s most successful shows of all time, drawing in millions of viewers. But how has Schafer adjusted to the overnight fame that the show has brought her?

How did Hunter Schafer earn a spot in the ‘Euphoria’ cast?

Prior to joining the Euphoria cast, Schafer was making a name for herself as a model and accruing quite a bit of success. In fact, it was through her modeling agency that she learned about the role of Jules. Having had no previous acting experience at the time, the 24-year-old was hardly looking to break into that sector of the entertainment industry. But when the opportunity came about, she went for it.

“It was my agency that told me about the audition for Euphoria,” Schafer revealed to Elle UK. “I think every trans girl at the time got the call. They asked me to come in for a reading, but I wasn’t looking for it.” After multiple rounds of auditions, it was clear that Schafer was the choice for Jules. From there, she started shooting, learning about acting as she was in the process of filming.

For example, she’s made changes to the way she dresses in everyday life. “I used to get really dressed up,” she explained. “I still love doing that. But I know that now comes with more attention. When she first got the audition for Euphoria, Sweeney turned it down because the role required nudity. But ironically, playing a character that requires her to show her body has made Sweeney more confident.

Sweeney has shared that she initially rejected her Euphoria audition because she felt her more conservative family would “kill” her if she took the role. However, when the opportunity got sent to her again, she couldn’t resist putting herself on tape for it. Ultimately, she won the role and decided that she’d cope with the nudity it required because she felt it was realistic and essential to her character’s storyline. But The Players Table producer likely wasn’t expecting playing Cassie to boost her confidence in her own body.

“The entire process has kind of forced me to go outside of my comfort zone because Cassie, especially this season, is such a challenge,” Sweeney shared with Good Morning America about filming Euphoria Season 2. “I definitely have become more free and confident with my body. I have definitely struggled with a lot of body dysmorphia and been self-conscious. And judging myself in a very sick, hard way. But with Cassie, I mean, everything’s out there, in the public, and I can’t really control that. So it’s helped me in a therapeutic, weird way, accept my body in a different way.”

Continuing on, Sweeney shared that her body hatred started young and was a result of hitting puberty early on in life. “I had boobs in middle school,” she explained. “And I got horribly bullied for it because no one else had gone through puberty. And so, I hated my body. And so having a character like Cassie, and embracing it, has been really, really, powerful for myself.”

There’s been a lot of political speculation around Sydney Sweeney as of late. Though the actor has remained pretty tight-lipped about her personal politics, it hasn’t stopped fans and critics from making assumptions. Because Sweeney is in the extremely liberal show Euphoria, many people believed she leaned left. However, after she threw her mom a surprise birthday party, some began wondering if she was privately a Trump supporter.

Sweeney doesn’t like to speak about politics, but she made her feelings about abortion crystal clear

Sweeney has asked people not to make assumptions about her personal politics. But has she ever gotten candid about her political affiliation? While Sweeney has seemingly never thrown her support behind any political party, she did express her opinions about abortion rights while speaking with Flaunt Magazine. “I don’t like getting into political topics, but I do believe that a woman has the right to be able to decide over her body,” she declared.

Considering Sweeney’s character in Euphoria decided to get an abortion, Sweeney’s sentiments on reproductive rights make sense. However, it doesn’t seem like the actor is going to share anything more about her personal politics anytime soon. When asked to comment on her mother’s birthday party and what people assumed about her political views, she opted not to clarify anything.

Honestly, I feel like nothing I say can help the conversation,” Sweeney shared with GQ UK. “It’s been turning into a wildfire, and nothing I can say will take it back to the correct track.”

Sydney Sweeney’s political views came into question back in August

Though Sweeney lives in Hollywood now, she grew up on the border of Washington and Idaho. The Players Table producer has shared that people in her small hometown of Spokane weren’t always supportive of her acting dreams. However, she always felt supported by her family, and they remain very important fixtures in her life. Sweeney loves returning home to the Pacific Northwest and spending time with her family.

Back in August, Sweeney took a break from her busy schedule to throw her mother a 60th birthday party. The Emmy-nominated actor took photos of the hoedown-themed affair and posted them on her Instagram. However, other photos from the event surfaced soon after. Photos showed quite a few people at the party wearing MAGA-inspired hats. One man (who many presumed to be Sweeney’s mother’s boyfriend) was also wearing a T-shirt with imagery of the thin blue line flag.

Almost immediately, people on the Internet began to question Sweeney’s politics. They even made jokes about the actor and her family being present at the infamous January 6 insurrection. Soon after that, Sweeney hopped online to address the claims about her and her loved ones.
